Support for the Saitek X52 Hotas Joystick

Recommended Posts

Most people here don't seem to use joysticks at all. The bigger issue may be that KSP doesn't use profiles. Someone would need to send you their entire settings.cfg. If they sent chunks, the effort on your end would be similar to setting it up yourself.

I have a Saitek X52 Pro, but I don't use a profile. In fact, I've found that using the joystick to fly rockets is terrible, since it's hard to get the precision needed for maneuvering. You either have to have a big dead zone, which causes jerky maneuvering, or a small dead zone, which tends to result in little phantom torques and is even worse. The throttle is indispensable, however! It's a whole different game once you can use the analog throttle to get fine control. I just disconnected the joystick from the throttle, and only use the throttle axis, and the thumb button on the throttle for staging (less likely to accidentally hit that than something on the keyboard).

Good idea indeed, I will give it a shot. How do you handle maneuvering then? keyboard?

I use a Logitech joystick and SpeedDaemon is right about the precision, keyboard works better for fine control, I like the stick for flying planes though. I do have the RCS controls on my hat, and I find that much easier to use than the keyboard.

Keyboard and MechJeb Smart A.S.S...

Another gotcha is that the axis setup for the joystick has to be changed when switching between rockets and space planes. Usually the stick gives you pitch and roll, and twist is yaw, which is fine for aircraft, but rockets you really want pitch and yaw on the stick and twist for roll. Again, better to just leave the stick out when flying rockets, and leave it set up for space planes.

My joystick throttle broke a week ago and I don't understand how anyone plays using the keyboard for throttle. I had to buy an identical joystick so my girlfriend wouldn't know.

Thats funny, I play a lot of Il-2 and wear out joysticks, so I buy the same one so the wife doesn't know.
