Greeting Kerbals and Kerbonauts

I purchased the game on Steam about 2 weeks ago and just yesterday successfully added several of the available mods to it. Toolbar, Navball enhancements, B9, NEAR (after playing with FAR), Procedural Wings, Mechjeb, the entire suite of Klockheed Martian stuff, and KW Rockets. Learning the proper way to add mods was by far the most steep learning curve I've ventured into, it took nearly 3 days for me to decipher the instructions and get them installed correctly. Now that I've surpassed the NOOB stage the instructions seem obvious, but the call on the forums to standardize the mod offering was striking a chord with me at the time.

After reading through the forums for a couple of days, I'd have to say that this is the most helpful game community I've ever seen. Congratulations to those that make this forum what it is. I've bookmarked things like Pecan's "Exploring the system-A Design Tutorial campaign" and Wonderfound's "Kerbodyne Scattershot" as my next ventures.

One question I have is if there is a primer on "action groups" with some examples that someone has a link to. I think I know what they are, but I'd like to understand more about how to create them and see some examples. I tried searching the forum, but without knowing exactly what I'm looking for it's hard to "pluck the gems" out of the extensive search results.

Thanks everyone, I'm really enjoying this adventure (I'm reticent to call it a game because there's no way to beat it or win)

Welcome!

I found

on action groups on the Wiki's tutorial page. Everyone seems to use them their own way. I tend not to bother with action groups except when time is of the essence. I do try to keep a consistent pattern so that I remember where everything is:

  • Abort: Shuts down engines & starts ejection/escape systems
  • 0: Secondary abort procedures – deploy parachutes and decouple LES
  • 8 & 9: Raise and lower flaps for planes (you can set those in the SPH with a right-click)
  • 1, 2, & 3: Toggle engines and modes

I've seen other people set up all their science modules to action groups so they can run all at once. They're also useful for building robots.

If you find yourself using Action Groups extensively, you should check out this mod.

Welcome to the Forum!

I can't give you a tutorial on how to setup and use action groups, but maybe if you watch some videos you'll learn. They get really useful, for example you can easily rescue your Kerbals when your launch is a fail with the "Abort" action group without spacebar-spamming (guess who made this..) until you finally decoupled your cockpit and opened your parachutes..

On the tutorials: I highly recommend Pecan's "Exploring The System - A design tutorial campaign". I learned playing KSP with it and there are still a lot of things to learn. I've got about 40 hours of playtime in KSP and I still look for new things to do or I even play missions like these in Pecan's tutorial. I haven't tested out the spaceplane in the other thread you posted, but if you want to build a spaceplane yourself, you might want to have a look at this post: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/52080-Basic-Aircraft-Design-Explained-Simply-With-Pictures .

If you've got some more questions, just ask! That's what the forum is made for. Have fun!

Volcanix.

PS: Oh, one another thing. How did you change the name of the links? I know how to do it in HTML, but I'm pretty sure this is BB-Code, is it?

The text editor has the hyperlink icon in the toolbar (the globe with the chain link). It lets you highlight text like this, and specify the URL that the text should link to. The link goes to the Delta-V map found in Pecan's tutorial

Yeah, I already thought something like that. Do I need to highlight the text for the URL before? Testing..

Oh, thank you so much. I already thought that was a bug.

Volcanix, what the HECK? I just saw this Basic Aircraft Design -Explained simply with pictures in the footer of your post. Why didn't I see that before?

Thus concludes my 3rd post and I should now be free of the Super Secret Squirrel (Curious George) bot prevention detention! I've proven (hopefully) that I exist! :-P

-mod edit: yes, yes you have-
