Why do things randomly explode on the ground when I load a save?

Recommended Posts

I'm making a small rover landing base of sorts on Kerbin as a trial run for Minmus. Whenever I have something small on the ground (like say a rover) and load the game, it'll do one of a few things:

1) Nothing

2) Immediately pop up in the air and then explode when it lands

3) Nothing immediately, and then later it'll pop up in the air and explode when it lands

Doesn't seem to be any correlation to any action I'm doing, so I'm curious as to what causes this and more so, how to fix it. Is it related to the kraken bug? Or just another idiosyncrasy of the game's design?

KSP is a bit finicky with large things on the ground. One thing to try is turning up the terrain setting. If it's too low, it can cause problems depending on where your base is positioned because parts may end up "underground."

Actually it seems to be only the smaller things that are affected. The larger base structure has never had the issue (knock on wood), but I'll give that a go if possible. I figured something like that was what was happening (that or the items themselves conflicting with one another) but didn't think to try setting adjustments.

Hmm... Maybe you can try reading this thread and providing a bit more information for us to help you troubleshoot.

Things like pictures, log files, and perhaps what your F3 flight log says may be helpful. Also, if you are using mods please list those.

Thanks,

Well it's a modded install but I doubt the mods have anything to do with it. I don't have any terrain modifying ones to my knowledge.

Basically I've narrowed it down to this: I walk within 200 meters of an object (seemingly any object but I think slopes make it worse) or I switch into said object that's 200 meters+ away from my current active object (in this case a Kerbal on the ground) and then the terrain pops up (loading a higher detail I guess) which causes the object to pop up in the air as well and then explode when it falls back down. I tried it on low, medium, and high detail terrain and low detail sinks everything completely below the ground, medium has the same issue but pops things into the air higher, and high detail has the same issue but pops things into the air only a few meters, which you can eventually, with a lot of quicksaving and loading, get things to land appropriately.

Anyhow:

The problem is likely caused by the wheels you are using on your rover. Sometimes what happens is the wheels don't align with the surface properly when you reload or even switch between craft. If they end up below the planet's surface it could cause your craft to hop up or even explode due to a reaction with the surface. This will occasionally happens with stock parts like the aircraft landing gear. If they're modded parts then you'll have to contact the dev and let them know about it.

The best part to use to avoid that problem is landing legs.

Landing legs can cause problems too, even in a completely stock environment. Try landing on eve with a ship that's heavy on fuel for the return trip, and then finding out that you don't have enough landing legs. Many times, the legs don't break initially, but will start to wobble and act funny, often clipping below the surface. Exiting to the space center and then returning can sometimes fix the issue, but can also cause explosions. So, the best tool to get around this kind of thing is the alt-f5 combination for quicksaves and the alt-f9 for quickloads. But, everything that has been said here in this thread so far may be totally off-base. We need screenshots of the affected craft to accurately troubleshoot.
