Silver Eagle
Hi remember the 0.19 update we were going to get mining Like Kethane but better and stock but we never got it so I was wondering if anyone knows what happened to it. And before you point it out to me I know the dev's can change things any time they want . all that time ago I was so looking forward to driving Jeb on the Mun at lunatic speeds in search of stuff to mine and building massive mining bases anyway what do you think happened to it and when do you think we will get it?Also what where your plans for 0.19. Sirrobert
It was shelved, because the devs determined, after testing, that it was not fun
Commander Jebidiah
The devs took it away because they thought it would be a boring gameplay mechanic which if they looked at the amount of downloads kethane has they would think differently
TNM
I'm not sure about the "fun" part, you have to say something when you scrap a feature alot of ppl wanted, but i think its not completely dead. It seems to be the perfect "DLC" content for later. I guess Squad just wants to get KSP to 1.0 now as fast as possible, finishing up career. They got sidetracked with the NASA stuff, but i suppose they got something out of that too (at least publicity). Now its streight to 1.0, then...we will see.In the meantime theres Kethane, MKS (with additional ressources), and the new Karbonite Ressources. FITorion
It's about as canceled as it's possible for something to be. There are no plans to ever revisit it. All the things mining resources would have been the foundation for... such as building bases on the other worlds... it's all not going to happen...They could change their minds. If they are to ever do... it will be after the game is out and probably as DLC...
timsfitz
Well I would certainly pay 10 bucks for an official add on that had mining and more base structures with IVAs. Sucks they gave up on it. If it wasn't fun maybe they should've worked on it more to make it fun. This thread will be locked soon methinks
boxman
It was shelved, because the devs determined, after testing, that it was not funSome of the devs*I wont mention names but at least one of the ex devs said that he/she did not understand why it was shelved because it seemed to add alot to the game.My bet is that they thought it would make the game too hard for the new players so instead of actually adding the ability to turn such feature on/off they shelved it alltogether :\And as others have been saying.. I would be happy to even pay for this if it was released in the form of a DLC.
Rithsom
Yeah, this would be perfect as a DLC if they don't decide to add it into the game. Even if it's not free, I would definitely pay for it because I spent so much time playing this game already!
SkyHook
INB4 lock! I am as disappointed as you that Squad cancelled resources. They considered it to be unfun, and out of scope. How is ISRU that enhances space exploration out of scope? Idk. I guess all we are supposed to be able to do is stand outside and take EVA reports.. Harverster is quite the proponent of casual, lackadaisical gameplay, and the planning and complexity required for resources was against his philosophy I guess... Tinyboss
Well as long as Squad remains as mod-friendly as they are today, we'll have the things we want most, e.g. Kethane. I think it's actually perfect if Squad focuses the stock game on really core gameplay and continues to expand the scope of what's possible for modders to add. Silver Eagle
Ok thanks for the quick responses sad to hear it was axed but I think you're right it will probably be in a future DLC but how long do we wait months maybe years oh we'll doesn't look like Kethane will be leaving my mod list any time soon not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing. Aethon
Stock resources would add a lot to an already great game. Perhaps you haven't heard of Karbonite ( I'll edit in the link ). I haven't tried it yet but have been following the development. It's community created, has interlocking compatibility with other mods ( ScanSat, Rasterprop monitor, etc ). Seems to open a whole new window of game play.http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/89401-24-2-Karbonite-Mineable-Burnable-and-Community-Friendly-0-2-2-2014-08-10 Edited August 10, 2014 by Aethon
Tw1
The devs took it away because they thought it would be a boring gameplay mechanic which if they looked at the amount of downloads kethane has they would think differentlyWhich is an odd, seeing as the science system often feels like some sort of resource collection than actual science. While I wouldn't find any sort or commercial mining believable with the technology the kerbals have in stock, It would be nice for bases to be able to make use of local material. But that's why I use kethane, and am trying karbonite.
Aragosnat
Yeah. It would have been fun too. Sadly they might never have played MineCraft. At least that is not as evil as Dwarf Fortress.
FITorion
If the devs don't... A mod... a really large mod... will have to be created to do it.Kethane is a start. Think that but add multiple different resources... different tools for gathering them... different parts to process the raw materials into refined resources... Then using those resources to build KSC like buildings on the other planets. Have a VAB and launch site...(I know there is a mod for this) or an orbiting VAB(shipyard)... Build things directly in orbit. Truly become a interplanetary civilization. I am really disappointed they scrapped it...
TNM
@FITorioni'm sure you know about USI (former MKS), 4 new ressources and different buildings to refine/use them. Its a start.
pxi
I had been really looking forward to resource gathering. I thought the flowchart that was floating about at the time was very well thought out. I was very disappointed when it was determined to be unfun, and not for inclusion.Kethane has filled this role for the most part, and I'm planning to check out Karbonite in the near future.I would really hope that Harvester & Co revisit this in the future. Science is equally as grindy and unfun as resource collection, but it adds a much-needed extra dimension to the range of gameplay options. As an aside, I've been playing Space Engineers quite a lot. For a game that is almost exclusively about gathering resources, it's a blast.
problemecium
o_OI too think this thread is going to get locked. It sure is a negative atmosphere around here. *waves hands to clear away the imaginary cloud of negativity*Remember when we were never going to get multiplayer? Then SQUAD decided to change their minds and start working on multiplayer. There's a very real chance they may revisit resources. I'm pretty sure they have looked at the popularity of Kethane and Karbonite, judging by their featuring both add-ons on the Tumblr page. It may not be in 0.25 or 0.24.3, or even in 0.26, but you never know.
Thomas988
I would love mining if it was stock.
timsfitz
Adding resources and other advanced technologies is very much needed for late game material. As it stands the tech tree can be completed before even exploring the solar system. After that the science just piles up. The money as well. People complain there is little point to building bases and little to do on planet surfaces. Resources fill that void nicely.
Seshins
INb4 lock - I think resources could be hugely enjoyable, and add to the game. Science at the moment is.... well it is what it is. But i can't say the science mechanic has me chomping at the bit to play KSP at the moment. In fact i've gone BACK to sandbox play just to avoid the science mechanic. I know some really enjoy it, and that's cool, but damn its boring.

Red Iron Crown
Someone needs to post the crazy spaghetti chart of the planned resource model (can't seem to find it now).If they stuck to that plan, I can see how it was unfun. Way too complex, with too many interdependencies. Also, as I understand it the mechanic of harvesting resources involved staring at your miner/processor as it extracted or processed resources, which seems about as much fun as watching paint dry.If it were ever implemented in stock, I hope it would be much simpler: Maybe just harvest water from whatever bodies have it, then convert it into liquid fuel, oxidizer, and monopropellant (and a life support resource, if that ever becomes a thing). Unfocused gathering/processing is a must, and it might be better to have the resources be inexhaustible (I wouldn't necessarily like to have to make supply runs for a surface base that's exhausted its supply). Basically I'd like it to be a simple method of resupply at faraway locations, not a scavenger hunt minigame. Now waiting for LethalDose and Northstar1989 to post, they're big proponents of resource gathering IIRC. DocMoriarty
All in all i would have liked to see resource mining simply because it adds some sense in going somewhere after an initial landing for research. Could even be part of sophisticated missions. But we are probably going to see it back in a DLC is my guess.
