Reputation - What is it good for?

I started back up with 0.24.2 and this shiny reputation stuff looks nice...except Jeb just got back from the first ever trip to the Mun and got a whopping 0.5 stars. So it looks like there are diminishing returns once the pointer gets close to the 100 mark.

Really, I just want to know what it's good for. Do I get shinier missions when I have more reputation? Can I show off my super-great rep to my friends? It seems pretty easy to get lots of it and keep it high (just don't kill any kerbals).

AFAIK rep in 0.24.x is a placeholder to be used in future versions for something, like part cost was in 0.23.5 and before. In other words, so far it does nothing besides being shiny

I'm pretty sure that it also allows you to get better (more difficult and/or rewarding) contracts as well.

It's a factor in procedural contract generation. The higher your reputation, the more difficult and potentially rewarding the contracts get.

Really? Thanks for the enlightement But if that is so, it really needs rebalancing since that, even with all reverts and quicksaves locked, it is easy to get almost maxed out rep ...

I think science, funds and rep have all been made easy to get in the first iteration of career mode to make any balance issues less game breaking. It will be revised before 1.0, I'd imagine.
