Kerbal Challenges Weekly! (Current Challenge: Arkingthaad Ultra-Lite!)

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone! Taking a page out of the old “HORSE†Challenge, I present to you:

Kerbal Challenges Weekly!

This is a bit different than the older challenge. Each challenge must have some way of counting points. Whoever gets the highest score after the week is up gets to post the next challenge. (This means that you can spend far more time on your entries, and make more difficult challenges.) Challenges must be posted on a Saturday, and completed by the next Saturday.

Here are some general rules to abide by. Please read them before submitting a challenge:

>As always, read the Challenge Rules and make sure that your challenge fits within the guidelines.

>When you’re presenting your challenge, please give a catchy title and brief description of the challenge, along with all rules and all methods of gaining points.

>Please keep the challenges 100% stock. If you can’t complete the challenge with a stock craft, then you may need to rethink it. This is just so that everyone can participate.

>That being said, for a particularly difficult challenge, you may want to provide proof that you completed the challenge yourself. This attempt, however, will not be scored.

>Please have a solid method of counting points. For example, you could do a thing in the lowest time, at the lowest/highest altitude, with the lowest part count, at the lowest/highest speed, etc. If you do this correctly, your challenge should have a single winner.

>You can submit a craft for others to achieve a goal with, but please keep any submitted craft under 250 parts, for the sake of those with slow computers.

>If you don’t follow the above rules, the second-place participant will make an alternate challenge. The challenge will still end on a Saturday, though, so if they don’t post anything, I’ll come up with an alternate challenge by Wednesday.

Let me know if this requires any clarifications, and I’ll iron things out as soon as possible.

The Current Challenge, Should You Choose to Accept It (submitted by Avera9eJoe):

The Arkingthaad Ultra-Lite!

The Arkingthaad ULTRA-lite

This challenge is not for the faint of heart. It is a challenge in any measure.

Rules: Create an image album (or video) of what you've done with the Arkingthaad ULTRA-lite. No completion date. Assemble it, launch it, do what you want with it, and perform a hard landing back at KSC. Note that this is NOT SSTO worthy and it will need a boost of some sort to orbit. Assembly can be in orbit, or on the ground, but NO MODS!

You will need to post pictures of assembling, launching, refueling, and any landings you complete as a minimum.

I shall do ;).

I broke apart on landing but I got there in just around 5 minutes (4:57 when my wing touches). Count it or not, it was fun :).

No losing parts during the flight!

So uh, what about AFTER the flight and in the landing... lol jk.

As lovely as Mainsail drop tanks are, I would still say that they don't really fit within the rules, because dropping the tanks means losing parts... and losing parts means a DQ. Other than that and the bungled landing though, you did a very nice job. :)

You expressed concern in the video about infinigliding and using parachutes. Both of these things are fine, because the rules don't prohibit them. As a matter of fact, I'm almost counting on the winning entry to use infinigliders, because they are capable of producing massive acceleration in the thick lower atmosphere. I'm going to put out a prediction that it can be done in less than three minutes, if someone's really good.

I'm editing the rules a tiny little bit, so that the craft must carry a Kerbal, and specifying that the lowest in-game time wins, so that someone doesn't speed up to 4x warp and then get irritated that the challenge doesn't work that way. Hope you don't mind.

...oh, and Avera9eJoe, your little brother is really cute. :)

:D I had fun doing this and yes he is very cute :). And loud xD. NOOOO I've been dq'd! Lol I don't really care it was fun :). And very against the rules. Still though, I want to see if anyone can get back under 5 minutes.

I'll put this up on the main screen after I write this, but just because your current attempt is considered DQ'ed, that doesn't mean that you can't post other attempts to eventually qualify :) ... and yes, I'm looking forwards to the entries that should be coming soon, as well. I'm going to try this out for myself in a bit.

Here's the challenge that Avera9eJoe gave... it's a doozy. Best of luck.

For those of you who have been keeping tabs on the Kerbin Cup, WhackJob came up with the final challenge. The Arkingthaad lite. A true kerbal monstrosity. For all of you who didn't get to compete, this will be the first* installment in an Unofficial Kerbin Cup with SOLO TEAMS rather than a 4 person block.

*first being if there are enough contestants

Here's the original challenge from WhackJob:

Current (Whackjob) Challenge

Friends, Countrymen, Kerbishtanis!

After learning that I would not be able to compete in the Kerbal Cup as a solo clown act, I was initially disappointed. Our good mutual friend, Rowsdower, gave me a wonderful opportunity to still have a hand in this fun event. Instead of playing the role of the plucky hero, I instead will get the opportunity to play the role of irritating mini-boss. This is level three. The Konami code does nothing.

Initially I had a much more thorough challenge planned out to subject you to. There were time constraints, however. I only had so long to build, and you have but one week to complete it. If there's nothing else that you learn in KSP, you learn to compromise. So I took my bag of tricks and managed to shake this challenge out.

I have built another Arkingthaad Tower Lander. I used some new parts. It is HERE for your use. Your challenge is to take it to orbit (I tested it myself, it is SSTO compliant, but will need refueling before going elsewhere). Once in orbit, go on a sightseeing tour. Land in interesting places, take pictures and create a photo album with a narrative. Once done with your tour, return and land at the Kerbal Space Center via powered landing, since Whack don't do chutes. The Tower Lander is equipped with a fully functional custom landing leg of my usual design which is capable of supporting the entire rocket plus full fuel load in Kerbin gravity. Feel free to add on to the ship if you should prefer to.

Oh, and lest I forget... some assembly will be required. *evil cackle* *mini-boss music begins*

Good luck, everybody! :D

No hyperedit, please.

I probably should've added some extra docking ports to that thing... Oh well! I take it you will be trying this challenge too Darren9?
I was thinking, with mods, maybe. Seems quite a serious undertaking in stock, on the bright side though there's prolly going to be few stupid enough to attempt it, which would increase my chances :)

What was the previous challenge?

A hangar dash. Launch a craft and fly it through both hangars and land it as fast as you can. No losing parts, no mods. I technically won though I had drop tanks AND crashed on landing because no one else tried :P.

This challenge is a bit more crazy... Imma tone it down by a bit and make it one big ship instead of 5 segments. In light that my game crashed, I'll wait until Unity 5 comes out to try assembling this again.

Man I was too late. I got it done in 3:41 today but u missed it by a few dsys. I should have read the rules. I bet I can do it faster too.

That's rather a shame... I would love to see some screenshots of that though. Sounds pretty awesome.

By the way, is anyone currently working on the Arkingthaad challenge? I'm a little worried about the lack of activity on this thread, right now.

I have a great Idea for the next challenge if nobody wins.

Wait, I don't think that your entry was stock, was it? If it wasn't, then it can't be counted as an entry. (I can't imagine that acceleration in the lower atmosphere without NEAR/FAR, and the air-brakes don't seem to be stock either.)

Sorry, but the rules are pretty clear about this:

>Please keep the challenges 100% stock. If you can’t complete the challenge with a stock craft, then you may need to rethink it. This is just so that everyone can participate.

If you can show that this craft was 100% stock and was flown without NEAR or FAR, congrants! You can post the next challenge. Otherwise, I think I'll come up with the next challenge.

Hey Avera9eJoe? Do you want me to extend your challenge for another week, so that someone will maybe complete it? It doesn't seem as if anybody will get the challenge done this week.
