A Few Questions on EVAs, Space Stations & Shuttle Remote Manipulator System (SRMS)

Recommended Posts

I have a few questions on EVAs, Space Stations & theShuttle Remote Manipulator System (SRMS),

1) I’m just wondering if there are any tips for using the SAFER (Jetpack). Yes I know that is a tutorial in the game but I seem to float off into the final frontier when I just trying get from the Hatch to my target.

2) When you designing your large Space Stations, do you build your station in the VAB as a complete station so you can set the action groups & then do you disassembled it or do you just build & launch it in sections?

3) I haven’t found any working Shuttle Remote Manipulator System (SRMS) (For the Mini Shuttle) that will work in 24.2, is there one that have I missed?

Thanks,

1) Practice, practice, more practice.

2) Action groups can be set in section. Just group them in general, example, 9 for light source, 0 for ladder etc. So if you have 2 section of space station that assign with key 9 (for light source) separately , once they are docked together, both of them will be activated.

3) You need to look for mods. I have no ideal.

1) Small taps, slow motion. Even just a tap will set you moving; you don't have to keep it held down. One tap w to start moving forward; one shift tap to adjust your course slightly upward, etc etc.

2) I do it in segments. My first piece up will usually be a core section with multiple docking ports to attach extra segments to. To manage keybinds, just make sure all like tasks are on the same keybind for each part - my tradition, f'rinstance, is '8' for solar panels.

3) Infernal Robotics isn't updated yet?

1) IF you think you're moving you're moving. If you know you're moving you're going too fast. Generally a tap or two in the desired direction is more than enough.

2) I have a general idea planned out in the VAB and then broken into sections, but once the first module goes up (the core) all bets are off on the design.

3)Infernal robotics and Dromomon arm parts are the way to go. you will probably need KAS for the Dromomon, but it's the best out there.

1) Yep, like others have said. Just practice. I used to send up space ships for the sole purpose of practicing EVA. Just like real life.

2) I build in segments, so that they are strong enough on their own. At some point I assemble them in the VAB (if it fits) to ensure it all goes together like I imagine.

3) Wish I could suggest something that's complete. Infernal Robotics allows you to build your own, but I'm guessing that's not what you're looking for.

Cheers,

Regarding your point 1:

you need to realize that once you start moving, you will keep moving. You don't need to thrust constantly to keep your speed. If you continue thrusting, you'll be gaining speed. Use short bursts and move your Kerbal around the ship slowly. If he seems to be escaping in certain direction, thrust in opposite direction to slow him down.

Rotate your camera so the point you want to reach is straight ahead of you (behind the Kerbal's helmet). Use A/D/Shift/Ctrl to stop him moving to the left, right, up, or down relatively to that line and then use W to get him moving towards the target.
