Space Shuttles+?

Recommended Posts

If squad is putting Space Planes + into the stock game, but why don't they also put overhauled MK3 fuselage system? In some cases it will be even more practical than adding new MK2 parts. Just think about space shuttles. 1.25m parts barely fit into the MK2 cargo bay. But with bigger parts it will be easier to send satelites, or maybe even small space station components. It can go even further with adding some of B9 parts systems, that are big enough to fit 2.5m parts into them, just some paint job to make them look more stock alike. There are more missing parts in SPH than just better MK2. For me most of B9 pack could be official part of KSP after some retexturing, because, they perfectly fit in gaps beween stock space planes.

So what I'd also like to see:

- Better MK3 Fuselage System

- S2 Fuselage System from B9 Aerospace

- HL Fuselage System from B9 Aerospace (With those radialy attached parts, whose name I don't remember :P)

What do you think? Do we need bigger space plane parts? And don't say, that I can download some mods because they're adding SP+ into the stock game, when we could download them from Curse.

Endorsed, however: Squad, please don't limit it to just shuttle-style.

Larger cargo bays would be lovely, but I don't want a NASA-style shuttle (plenty of other folks do, and they should be catered for, but they ain't me). Just gimme a larger version of SP+; I want SSTO spaceplanes that look like SSTO spaceplanes, not a vertical-launch reentry glider.

They are. You must not have seen the screenshot.

That being said, from early looks it doesn't seem to go beyond a simple revamp. To make it work as a shuttle system it would need at least a cargo bay and engines that gimbal a lot of degrees or at least automatically gimbal so that the thrust vector goes through the center of mass. Even then it's of limited use because the Mk3 fuselage is too small to fit in 2.5m parts. And what use are space shuttles if you can't build decent sized space stations or deliver parts for orbital construction of interplanetary ships?

Yeah, but they didn't say, that they are going to pu it into the game. and I'm not talking only about MK3, but also fuselages from B9.

They did. While plans can change, all of Hugo's devnotes talk about him redoing spaceplane parts in the Mk1 and Mk3 series. Not for fun, but for inclusion in the game. Also at this point, if Squad shows off new stuff they intend to put it in the game. They've learned from all the backlash when they showed off development shots of clouds, mining parts, etc. around 0.19 and didn't implement them.

1.25m parts fit quite nicely into the Mk2 Cargo bay parts, and those were confirmed (by max in a stream) for 0.25; as well as the redo of the Mk1 and Mk3 parts, and that's when he showed that picture of the Mk3 cockpit.

If they are adding cargo bays to the Mk2 parts, it's highly likely they'll add it to the Mk3 parts as well; but someone did say in the stream that it looked like 2.5m parts could not fit in the Mk3 fuselage shown, and max said they may tweak something about this...

I don't think we need any other types of fuselage after they have redone the current ones, they fill the niche perfectly; if you feel they don't fill the niche enough, just download B9! Plus, B9 has waaaaay too many parts to be implemented into stock, it would be pretty daunting to go from just over 200 parts to over 400 in the stock game...

I dunno, in messing around with Spaceplane Plus I haven't found the cargo bays all that useful aside from 0.625m probes and hiding ugly utility parts. A 1.25m payload will fit, but you are extremely restricted in radially attached parts and the lander can is right out. A Mk3 cargo bay would be much more useful for 1.25m payloads IMO.

Yeah, true, but half my 1.25m payloads will be a fuel tank sort of diameter and maybe Goo Pods on the sides, which fits nicely for me, which is why I say it... If they make it so Mk3 bays can fit 2.5m parts they will be much more useful in most aspects.

True, though that would require the Mk3 series to be huge. Tiberion used Tweakscale to try it out here, it looks like the Mk3 series would have to be close in size to the 3.75m Kerbodyne parts to work well. Maybe that will happen, who knows?

He's gone a bit overboard on that scaling, though; you could shave 10% off that and still fit the tank in.

Large cargo bays would be great, but they don't have to be that generous. I don't mind if there's a bit of delicate wiggling involved in getting the payload back out again. It's all part of the fun; easing a probe out of a tight bay without snapping off its solar panels etc. can be quite entertaining.
