broken symmetry

Recommended Posts

im pretty sure this is caused by mounting structures to the "core" object when they are placed on the surface instead of the joints.

this causes several bugs.

1. all symmetry becomes irregular

2. struts will not mirror properly

3. rocket balance becomes irregular. (at first i thought this was because of some aerodynamics i was attempting but even after removing all aero surfaces the rocket begins to tilt even when thrust and COM are in perfect alignment) even using a single thruster and enclosing the irregular payload using fairings will not help)

4. also it seems the rocket decides its orientation based around the alignment of the core object instead of the distribution of thrust against the center of mass.

Yes, the editor will arrange symmetry around the orientation of the root part. This is partially what allows the VAB and SPH editors to have their different standard symmetry axes; the SPH merely has to start with the part oriented horizontally.

Doesn't really qualify as a bug, since as far as I know, it's working as it was intended to work -- though there are certainly better implementations possible.
