hellion13 Posted September 18, 2014 Share Posted September 18, 2014 While I realize at the moment no actual Steam boxes are out, I was wondering how playable, if at all, KSP might run. This is a question of great interest to me. Ive been a fan since .16, and this game became literally the only game i wished to play. But round about .22 I got dumb and got myself banned from owning a PC by the FBI(lol). An ad for the Alienware Alpha at the local walmart brought the long lost hope of playing and supporting KSP back to me, which is why i ask the question. Alshain Posted September 18, 2014 Share Posted September 18, 2014 (edited) Steam Machines are probably going to be PC hardware that runs Steam Big Picture only (they are calling it SteamOS but I'm betting it's a derivative of Big Picture). SteamOS is based on Debian and can run all the software Debian does - I've not heard of any effort by Valve to lock things down and why would they?So, you're probably still banned from having one. The Mechanic Posted September 18, 2014 Share Posted September 18, 2014 Way I see it, Steam Machines basically are PCs that are somewhat optimized to be used along with a TV/really big screen as a console. They run SteamOS which is based on Debian 7, so from my understanding a Steam Machine is basically a Linux gaming PC and thus should support the usual interface devices and therefore should run KSP if the hardware is able to. Luckily, KSP runs on Linux, so it should be SteamOS compatible, but if you actually have been banned from owning a computer, then you're out of luck. A steambox will likely be able to serve as a desktop pc, unless they strip the desktop out. (Even then, it's still linux, and getting the desktop back would probably be pretty easy.)EDIT: also ninja'd. No fine or anything but they did take my custom PC and told me not to buy another. Now that i think about it im probably not actually banned but id rather not risk the ire buying a straight PC, i want some grey area to play in. Sad to say pirating is also how I got into KSP, but i later paid for a copy on Steam(hence the interest in Steamboxes) i also donated $50 to KSP on the webpage after giving up my PC in self repentance. ThirdHorseman Posted September 18, 2014 Share Posted September 18, 2014 With In-Home Streaming you can run KSP on 10-year-old laptop...you don't even need a Steam Box (which I think are WAAAAY too overpriced) or anything running SteamOS.Granted, you do need a gaming PC that you will stream from...so if you are not allowed to own a PC then this won't help. As for expensiveness, $550 for the Alienware is quite a deal when its possibly the only way to experience Kerbal coming my way anytime soon, other than watching Scott Manley play.......My only concern really will be Kerbal playability at this point, though if for some reason KSP doesnt work or doesnt play well there are a few hundred other games on Steam ive been dying to play but couldnt. There is no way they can just ban you from using a pc just from pirating and even then that has to be done through court process.
