Saves

This question comes up on every update... as new parts are added and old ones where thrown out, i guess there will be some incompatibilities with craft files, but the save should not be affected. Usually Squad puts a great effort in keeping save files save. And KSPs modder community reacts faster than any other i have encountered so far. Fear not.

The save files seem rather robust in reacting to missing parts. They just come up with a message about incompatible parts or something. Your craft won't load but it won't crash the game either. As for mod DLLs I can't say. It will all blow over soon after release I'm sure.

While I doubt very much that saves will break per se, spaceplanes (and spaceplane craft files) will.

From the dev notes:

Felipe (HarvesteR): Experimentals is upon us again and things are moving at a very intense pace to make sure all the features we’ve added are stable and polished. .......<snip>

I must warn however, that several SP+ parts do replace old parts, and it’s very likely that some spaceplane designs can become weird or misaligned. This won’t actually break saves, but ships featuring those old parts won’t look their best until rebuilt in the editor. For most cases, simply detaching and reattaching the misplaced parts will do. We decided it was for the best to simply bite the bullet on this one, because there is no point in having old parts linger around, wasting our already cramped memory space, just for the sake of delaying this inevitable change.

If you want to start preparing your saves for the release, I recommend recovering all ongoing spaceplane missions. The parts that have been most changed are the C7 delta wing and triangular wing sections, standard and small control surfaces, and minor changes were done to the mk1 fuselages and cockpit, and the entire mk2 set. I know it’s a bit of a hassle to have to do this, but trust me when I say it’s going to be well worth it!

As Maxmaps said in his stream, we're gonna get some adjustment time...

The new SpacePlane+ parts will be in 0.25, but the old, crappy plane parts will also be in 0.25; this means we can load out old plane designs, then change the wing parts to the new ones. The old plane parts will then be removed in 0.26, as they are awful :P

It's a very good idea on their part, I'm glad they did it even though I didn't expect they would; but that is a very strong suggestion that 0.25 won't break saves, as why would they allow you to load old plane designs if 0.25 broke saves?

As I have but one space plane that I kept, this won't bother me much. It actually doesn't even work well. I use it for splashdown tests on kerbin.

It should be generally accepted that Squad does make effort to prevent from breaking saves, but every now and then there will be an update when things are going to have to start fresh. 0.25 looks to be doing that, so it may be a good time to crack those knuckles and start thinking of what you'd like to do with a fresh start.

I'm definitely worried most of my SSTOs will have to be junked. The big lifters have had many, many hours put into making the wings fit together. It's going to be hard when I load them up all broken. Considering I've been designing in stock to prevent this exact same issue from occurring means I might abandon the stock install policy for craft design altogether. The good news is the new wing geometries may finally make designing large SSTOs easier and prettier.

I have been looking forward to some large wing sections making it into stock. Of course, procedural wings should be in the game by now.

Why would anyone care?

Because other people play the game differently to you and this is an issue. Hard to know if this is a troll or not.

Why would anyone care? You can always make a clean install, and only update that one to 0.25, and keep a copy of your 0.24.2 if you are really attached to it for some reason, right?

Well, there is quite a few people (including me) that have a lot of progress on a save (like bases and station around many planets/moons), and would like to know I'd they're going to lose it for 0.25 (because they want to keep their save but use the new features on it); also, if you were planning on starting a new save and 0.25 did break saves, it would be smarter to just wait till 0.25 to start it... But we can't make those decisions if we don't know! I think it won't break saves.

How long does it take for mod makers to update because I need my mods eg visual enhancements

It varies massively, some mods may not even break for 0.25, but some that do maybe updated the same day as 0.25 as the mod developer is on the QA team... We can't really answer that question!
