What is this "April Forum Disaster"?

What is it? I joined the forum back in July 2014 (yeah, this july) and I heard about tons of stuff about this "April Forum Disaster". What is it?

The big April Krash was a nasty forum software failure.

Several things went wrong and it went from bad to worse. Only option was to roll the forum back several months to a back-up that wasn't corrupted. Hundreds of accounts and thousands of post were lost in the process.

Ah... I see. I've also heard about similar things happening before? I can't remember the name of what happened, but some guy had something else that had "Forum Disaster" thing on there. It wasn't the April Krash.

You might also notice that an awful lot of accounts have a join date in April 2013. Many of these users are people who had their old accounts lost in the forum disaster and created new ones afterwards.

Possibly. Tex may have just happened to join in April 2013.

It was a Major Data lose for the forum.

I believe it was reverted to some point in early October the previous year, so around 6-7 months of data was lost.

oh... well I feel sorry for those who lost their account!

The loss of data was quite catastrophical and many threads had to be built up from naught. Fortunately Google had cached several pages still so we didn't lose everything

Yes, they've fixed the issue with the forum backups so we shouldn't experience that sort of thing again. My former join date was December 2012, but April got me. Never forget...
