fastest jet in ksp *UPDATED* 2/28/2019

Hello I'm lego8_bit and I was recently flying very fast around 1900 with a jet plane. Witch I thought of a very difficult challenge. You have to beat the speed of (2200 m/s Stock, 1500 m/s FAR)with a PURE jet. The rules are simple,

RULES:

  Reveal hidden contents

 

1. MAX ALT is 50,000

2. Updated* Due to the atmospheric update i will allow opt mod Aka the ADVANCED TURBORAMJET! and the scram jet mods or stock only! (But DRE and Is Permitted to show Accurate mach speed)(also FAR is permitted I will have a separate speed category for FAR entry's)

3. No rapier engines

4. No rockets of any kind including Nuclear Rocket engines!!!!

5. UPDATE* You my use jet, turbojet, advanced turboramjet, and scramjet mod ONLY!

6. SURFACE SPEED ONLY

7. welp if your creating your world for this challenge you must leave the re entry heating at 100% (or Stock)

8. you can have up to 1-8 Air intakes.

9. no thrusterless jets

10. No Ctrl alt f12 crap either

11. You must take a screenshot of your alt and your speed and also proof of no cheats

 

That's simple oh and this is for versions 1.0.4 and up

If anyone can break mach 24 before hitting the 50k limit with an air breathing engine i will personally Show it off on a video in a showcase and have a Skype chat with them. with that in mind only 3 things on your craft ill allow if they gone missing from overeating. and you must land your craft Near or on the runway.

1. On October 17, 2014 at 20:40 WanderFound with FAR and DRE reached a speed Of 1794.4m/s and Mach 5.77 before his plane bit the dust

2. On October 27, 2014 at 14:17 toxictalon74 with FAR and DRE reached a speed Of 1570.0m/s and Mach 5.060 before his plane split into tiny pieces.

I think you'll find 2,229m/s is a bit more than mach 1.

Somewhat north of Mach 6, in fact.

Doing this is largely an exercise in patience; build a basic jet and skim the top of the atmosphere for as long as possible. And it definitely needs separate leaderboards for FAR/NEAR. Deadly Reentry shouldn't matter at these altitudes.

You should also put a limit on upper atmosphere level 36000 meters is probably best and it eliminates a lot of intake spamming as the drag is worse than the benefits at that range but it is YOUR challenge YOU decide the rules

And yes I know that height disqualifies my entry

I'll have to dig out my bird, had her up to 2600 in my test, but can't recall the intakes I used. But this is from my first flight, I need to still bring it out again.

But because it is stock only and I loath the stock souposphere dynamics and refuse to use it, at all. That will leave me out of it with my use of FAR.

Is the altitude limit just at time of screenshot, or is it intended to be a ceiling for the entire flight?

I'll see if I can get a FAR/DRE entry up for you. A bit below mach 6 is probably the limit in FAR, though.

Okay, let's see what a FAR/DRE jet can do...

Just a quick little something I threw together.

Up.

Supersonic in the vertical climb.

Time to level off.

Getting warm.

And finally into the hypersonic.

Top speed during the climb.

That's the top, time for a bounce.

Negligible thrust at this speed, the air is going through the intakes too fast for the turbojet to handle.

Getting some speed up...

Note the speeds in the previous two pics: the first is 1794.4m/s and Mach 5.67, while the second is 1792.0m/s and Mach 5.69. The first is faster in m/s, the second is faster in Mach. This is because Mach varies with altitude, while m/s does not. Which gives me an idea...

Speed in m/s peaks here, at 1787.9m/s.

Getting a bit on the toasty side.

Peak mach, 5.77. Oops.

This might hurt.

Nup, all good.

So: 1794.4m/s or Mach 5.77, your choice.

found this, it tells exactly what mach number is and how to calculate it along with the required maths. it might help, if anyone feels like double checking their figures for an entry for this contest.

Not possible in Stock KSP. The thrust curves for jets cut off at 2400 stock, or about 1800 FAR. Even falling can't get you to that sort of ludicrous speed unless you start from the edge of Kerbin's SOI (Where jets are not possible to use) You probably have broken configs.

ummm, something is wrong here. I noticed that in the second pic it shows you experiencing over 15G, where your flight log says 7.4G. I'm thinking bug, broken config, or cheating is going on. I like the air spamming though, might try it myself.

Active Texture Management is messing wth toolbars. And the navball readout and flight log g-meters have very little correlation with each other; it seems the flight log only registers sustained G's.

No idea about the speed, though.

This feels Photoshopped, check the KAC timer.. He traveled 17km vertical in 2.5 minutes and the blurred button could be a FAR one.

In picture 2 i notice a lack of smoke and he kept the same heading in both picture 2 and 3...

Lol you can say i cheated. I did. However I didn't use photoshop. I just wanted to see how you guys would react. I think its awesome how us users know how to spot out the cheaters and take em down!
