Building a new Computer

Well, I decided to build my own computer instead of buying one. The problem is, I have absolutely no idea how. The current one I have is just not useful for gaming at all, and I intend to use it for schoolwork, while the computer I build will be used for gaming. I plan to run rather resource intensive games, so I would probably need a good graphics card. Right now, I have my budget at $600, but I have a feeling that it is much too low for what I want to do. Could you give me some recommendations for what parts to buy and how much to spend? I would really appreciate any help you can give!

Protip that may or may not actually work: Have more than one processor, and if you like wiring and don\'t want it to overheat and want to make the computer seem bigger than it actually is, put the processors in different places. Also get fans, LOTS OF FANS

You can only have one processor.

Not fans, a robot shovelling dry ice into the back!

I sure hope you\'re not talking from experience.

Get parts at Newegg

TigerDirect is pretty good as well. I\'d shop around between the two to get the best deals.

From personal experience, I can say that customer support for any Diablotek product is absolutely terrible [Never returned our multiple calls or e-mails for a dead PSU]. I can say that Coolermaster makes much higher quality PSUs. In fact, I think that when I need to replace my computer, I\'ll just go for as much Coolermaster stuff as I can.

One more piece of advice: Go for slightly outdated tech, you can save a lot of money that way.

Oh god. Why AMD? WHYYYY???

I\'m an Intel fan right now :P

I\'d really say go with an i5, that\'s partially me favoring intel, but I\'m an intel fan because the I-series handles multi-threading and multi-tasking better, mainly due to hyperthreading.

AMD\'s are cheaper though, and can usually offer satisfactory performance if you go towards the higher end AMD\'s (NOT THE BULLDOZER LINE), which I believe you\'ve gone with. I know nothing about the AMD cpu line-up though. All the names mean nothing to me really except for bulldozer. Which was complete fail.

Hang on a while, I haven\'t really looked at compatibility yet but I think I have some suggestions.

e.g. Newegg typically has 'Bundle' Deals, so it may be possible to buy your RAM and processor together for $10 off or something like that.

Also, as for video cards,

check out the sapphire Radeon HD 6850 compared to what you selected

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Productcompare.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007709%204017&IsNodeId=1&bop=And&CompareItemList=48|14-102-908^14-102-908-TS%2C14-130-629^14-130-629-TS

note: If that link doesn\'t work, here\'s the video card I\'m looking at:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102908

Both are about the same price. Check out the reviews and search the web.

I think this one is more bang for your buck. Don\'t pay attention to 'Processing Cores' and 'Processing Units'; it\'s comparing apples to oranges, it means something different for each card.

Do notice that the sapphire has twice the bit memory interface though.

But again, look around. I\'m not saying this is better than what you chose (in fact, I have no idea), I just think it might be a worthy competitor against your choice for about the same price.

Oh! Pay no attention to mail-in-rebates. Most companies will never send them in to you, or delay it by a year after you hunt them down non-stop. It\'s basically a scam to make you feel like you\'re getting a better deal/the item costs less than others without rebates.

Yeah just updated my post to explain a bit.

AMD\'s aren\'t bad, they just don\'t match up to intel processors all the time.

They are always cheaper though, which I think is the only thing keeping AMD alive right now

AMD\'s Hexacore processor I believe falls just short of Intel\'s i7 line which only has 4 cores.

I forget which is cheaper (probably about even, maybe AMD slightly cheaper), but what it really shows is just that the structure of Intel CPU\'s are more efficient/streamlined.

Again, the Hyperthreading really helps.

Ati is run by AMD as far as I know...

Their graphics cards are a bit below Nvidias, personally I prefer ATi.

go get an 1155 system. your brain will thank you once you start playing. seriously, i have an amd 955, but a 2500k(best intel at the mo imo) is a safe bet for future proofness, and also a stonking ocer(if your into that stuff, like me) i used that webie too! ;)
