The game has gone from stable with tons of addons to being unable to load with one!

Recommended Posts

I don't know why, but for some reason this game in the last few updates has just become unplayable for me.

I use mods. It's what makes this game awesome. B9, KW Rocketry, KAS, etc. They're all fantastic. I can't load the game other than stock now. I don't have a bad computer, either. i5 3570k @ 4.3GHz, 8GB DDR3 RAM, 660Ti 3GB video RAM, etc.

I have no idea why, but loading any addons, B9 especially with or without the active management thing doesn't load at all and gets stuck loading something or other. When I DID get them to load, the game would CONSTANTLY crash for no reason. I'd get memory-related crashes too, even though I wasn't even close to the maximum memory my computer has. 60ish percent utilization. That's nothing.

What the hell? It's become a chore to even start the game up, and I'm getting kind of sick of it. I've tried everything from active management which makes the textures look like crap (doesn't even seem to fix the issue anymore) to doing several clean installs and deleting everything. Nothing works.

Hi,

I feel your pain.

I used around 50 mods in v.0.24.2, with v0.25 I reach the memory limit at around 37 mods installed.

Solution :

Since KSP winx64 is not stable yet, the launch parameter -force-opengl is your friend.

It will pass around 1.5GB from system memory to your VRAM : problem solved.

Hope this helps ;)

As the game gets updated, more and more stock parts get added; this takes up more and more memory, leaving less and less available for addons (there is a hard limit of about 3.3GB in 32bit on PCs, and less on Macs). Your only option right now if you want more memory available for use is to run the Linux 64bit client of KSP (there's no 64bit client for Mac, and the Windows one is very unstable). You can also try using OpenGL mode (if you're on PC) as Athlonic suggests; obviously on Mac or Linux it'll already be using OpenGL.

how would I use OpenGL mode? i am having the same problem.

If your are using Steam :

  • Right click KSP from your library -> Property -> General tab -> Set launch parameter
  • Enter -force-opengl
  • Click OK

If your are not using Steam like all these paranoids/haters :D :

  • Right click KSP desktop shorcut -> Shortcut tab
  • In the traget field enter (with the quotes and your personal path) : "***adapt with your path***\Kerbal Space Program\KSP.exe" -force-opengl
  • Click OK

Note :

if you have not many VRAM (< 2GB) on your graphic card you may want to try : -force-opengl -popupwindow

and play in windowed mode.

I only have around 15 addons and the game crashes all the time. how can I find the reason ?

People need a bit more info than a simple "I have a problem, please help."

In order to help you we'll at least need to know your KSP version (0.24/0.25, 32/64bit) and what which mods you've got.

Keep in mind: 64bit is extremely unstable for most people. And many mods have not yet been updated. Many that used to work fine with 0.24 have issues with 0.25.

The default 0.25 win64 is even more unstable for me than the 0.23.5 workaround, but the -force-opengl command still seems to work, as well as -force-d3d11.

The interesting thing is, the 0.25 with DX11 don't seems to have the weird textures glitches in the VAB and during reentry it had back in 0.23.5.

And the OpenGL version seems to render everything correctly, shadows and antialising.

DX11 use way more RAM than opengl, though. But I guess they both worth the try.

Edit: Whoops, my bad, DX11 bugs are still here, they were waiting for me to launch a second ship... Once again, it's quite random... But the OpenGL command is running fine, though.
