Sharing/distribution of modified CFG files

Where do config files fall in terms of licensing in terms of mods? Specifically, if I'm interested in making available config files (from both stock KSP and KSP Mods) that I've modified. I'm really not clear on how these files are handled, since I'm not redistributing .dlls or executables based on other modders work (i.e. I'm not compiling anything), but I am modifying and redistributing someone else's IP.

For context, I'll be starting a modded hard-mode campaign shortly with changes made to parameters values defined in CFG files. I plan on streaming and posting to YouTube, and would like to make the CFG available to other interested players.

Some specific questions that come to mind are:

  • Do I need to provide the original mod license in the same place where I make the CFG available?
  • Is there specific language in common licenses that would preclude redistribution of modified CFGs?
  • Do I need to provide my own license for the modified CFGs?
  • Do I need to inform or request permission from mod authors or SQUAD before making the files available?

And anything else anyone thinks I should know before doing this.

It is best practice to make all changes in Module Manager patches, since then you are not redistributing the original (or original modified, aka derivative) cfg.

Any addon you post is considered an addon and must follow the addon rules.

If the changes you are making are significant (as in Realism Overhaul and FASA) it's best to get the original author's permission even if all you're distributing is a Module Manager patch.

So, to be clear, the modified CFGs would be considered an "add-on"?

Sounds like I won't be doing this, then. After the conniption the community recently threw over something that was allowed by an add-on's license, I'm not going anywhere near anything that involving the license. And I'm not going to bang my head against the wall to figure out how to use ModuleManager for something as simple as changing parameter values.
