What is Kerbal Experience?

Hi all, I apologise for being ignorant, but the term Kerbal Experience has been tossed around lately, and I have no idea what it is, many people seemed to be dissappointed when it was pushed back to 0.26, so it must be something big, but I can't find anything on it. Thanks in advance for any information you might have.

Kerbal experience is the experience of having green skin, being just 1m tall and getting put into a spaceship that someone who (usually) definitely is no rocket scientist created

Jokes aside Kerbal experience basically means that the game keeps track of your individual Kerbal's achievements. It assigns them badges that signify which planet they've visited or what tasks they have done.

Oh... So I was way off. I can see why people were excited about this, it's more useful than VR at the moment. Also, will KSP have OR support in the end? I don't have one, but I plan on buying the finished product-if they ever release it...
