Touching parts should be joined together.and damage levels. New parts hierarchy system

Recommended Posts

I don't like an idea of welding parts, when you smash one of your engines, whole ship will disappear, which is very unrealistic. What if on every craft there would be a center point and parts would be attached directly to it? Neighbouring parts would be joined with with invisible struts. When you "cut" your vessel in half, there would pop out a new central point.

why would? this is a program. you can do ANYTHING. with welded together parts you can still brake the parts down... welding means the connection between the parts is fixed, no physical calculation is done on the joint. you can still distinguish which part has got hit...

I'm talking about tree hierarchy system, not only about wobbly structures. Does part welding remove tree hierarchy from the game then? I also don't want to make my crafts too stable.

yes, it would remove tree structure but it wouldnt change anything u can see except that there would be the chance to connect close enough parts.

here the green is the stock connection but as you can see the top structure is held just and only by the filled green joint. the red ones are not connected. would it hurt your "I also don't want to make my crafts too stable" feeling if it would be possible to connect them?

How do docking works from the code point of view? Is it possible to dock a closed loop? Like two ships that have three-stack adapters with clamp-o-trons and connected by them.

yeah, that could be done as well (at least temporarily), its just and extra line per connections saying this docking port is connected to that docking port though to give unlimited possibilities of connections it would be far more sensible to make a matrix growing with the part count and it can model any amount of connections easily...

I think some of the current problems can be diminished by introducing a materials system. At this moment the connection strength is based on mass. That's nice for something simple as stacking rocket tanks together.

But when building small you get very strange results. If I have a 7kg titanium or even steel crankshaft of a V8, no way an empty aluminum fuel tank with a mass of 3t. can have more joint rigidity or structural integrity. Meet KSP, your connections are now made of rubber.

I don't like welding if I have to use a mod for that. But ... being able to build gears without the teeth yo-yoing around would be nice. Oh, and the fact the teeth are pulling each other is because of another materials issue: there should be a control to tell colliders the slip/drag ratio.
