I'm fairly anti-steam so I'd go through the KSP store. It's my experience that games bought through steam need steam running/installed to work which makes steam the drm. I don't know if that's the case with KSP but having access to only one version seems silly anyway.

Nope, in addition to steam version, I also have 2 active copies (copy, pasted from steam folder) and one unused/deleted copy (RSS copy, it ran way... toooo slow (and I was horrible at it...))

general impression : Linux or wait... However my 4gb ram win laptop handles KSP with mods just fine.... with or without 64bit
