Night tours at KSC. While being popular are the most deadly and perilous. Professional skill level maybe required.

This is not hard to do, but, is hard to do fast. There are 30 Places Of Interest, POI, around the Kerbal Space Center. At each POI there are science experiments to be done.

Tour around KSC as fast as you can and grab all the science points from each of the 30 Places Of Interest, while avoiding all the night terrors and perils. Imaginary Transparent and hard to see, deadly UNKERBALs are floating around everywhere looking for brains.

Science gathering starts at midnight and ends at dawn (Kerbal time 3:00 -> 4:00). You can take as many nights as you need. Just tally up how many nights (1 kerbal hour) go by the initial time of the tour. This will give you free time until the next midnight. Maybe some preperations would be helpful for the next midnight run.

Any science left in vehicles must be recoverd during the same midnight hour and is otherwise lost at dawn.

Tours always start with Jeb at the launchpad/runway at kerbal time 3:00. After 4:00 the free time will start and then will stop at the next midnight.

Example: If on day two at the kerbal hour of 3:00 is the start of the tour. Two more nights later at Kerbal hour 4:00 is the finish of the tour. Then that's a total of three hours for the tour.

The fastest tour time is the safest time so that will be awarded once all the science points from each POI are completed. Spooky-vision time if you wait till there is a full Mun.

The Imaginary deadly, transparent UNKERBAL seem to feed off of electricity so better figure another way to control other than with SAS or reaction wheels. You have no way to run all of the flight guidance systems.

Fire is the only thing that will scare the deadly UNKERBAL. The vessel must have some sort of fuel to burn. Half throttle or more. We need lotsa big flames to scare the UNKERBAL. No stopping, the engines will not fire back up again once off the launch pad or runway. Keep on burning.

Badda boom explosions seem to scare off the wispy UNKERBAL. A rather large explosion close by to Jeb will then help him come out from hiding.

Wimpy explosions are laughed at and mocked by the UNKERBAL. Take a screen shot of the explosion and see how far the light radius is spread out around Jeb. Only 30 seconds of scare off time per explosion.

Most likely you will need two explosions. One explosion seperated from another explosion by 15 seconds. This will yield 45 seconds for an EVA report, surface sample, plant flag, grab experiments, store experments and board vessel. Hope Jeb is in fit physical shape.

Jeb needs somewhere to hide inside of. To protect his brain until dawn. No sitting in command seats unless you got explosions going off.

Explosions need to be close by to Jeb and in the air seems to destroy less of the beautiful Kerbal Science Center landscaping, but, I could be wrong. Maybe another crater/pond would improve the looks of the Mission Control Building. Besides, Gene likes to go fishing.

If you need another vehicle than go back to the VAB/SPH and launch but cost is 5 minute penalty. Maybe some unguided missles might help. These can be launched but no computer guidance and no other pilot. Only able to use staging and throttle.

The recovery team also needs 3 minutes to pick up the broken pieces vehicle and Jeb.

Time penalties only ocur during the midnight tour time and can be time warped through once on the launchpad/runway.

Example: If at the end of the first night and you need another vessel for the next night's tour then you have incurred at least 3 minutes for Recovery (with Jeb inside a vehicle) and 5 minutes for Preperation for a total of 8 minutes and must wait at launchpad/runway at the next midnight hour untill 3:08. Might not be a bad idea to have another vehicle prepared at the runway/launchpad ready for the next night. Start time of the tour would then be 3:13 because there are two vehicles to prepare.

If you complete this challenge in one vehicle and in 59 minutes then there will be no time penaty.

Start an easy game mode and crank up all the science. You can expand the tech tree and grab most everything you will need, if not enough science, then add some (just do some science in space no preperations for the tour though) and then save. Wait till spooky time and start the midnight tour.

Rules:

Stock 0.25

Unlimited nights midnight to dawn (3:00 -> 4:00)

Once the tour starts then time during the tour is only counted

No Electricity (see hint below)

No Flight Guidance Systems during midnight hour (SAS/reaction wheels)

Pilotless Vehicles can use Staging and Throttle Only

Lotsa Flames must set to Half Throttle Minimum

Badda Boom Explosions Scare off the UNKERBAL and Yield 30 seconds

Explosions Need Close Proximity to Jeb

Vehicle/Jeb Recovery = 3 minute time penalty

Vehicle Preperation = 5 minute time penalty

Destroy any building/kerbal = FAIL

Scoring:

Science Gathering for each of KSC's Point Of Interest:

EVA report = 4 point

Surface Sample = 4 point

Crew report = 2 points

Flag = 0 (Flags are a pain and waste time but how else can you can show off)

Post as:

Total POI Points / Time in hh:mm

Example: after getting to the R&D Observatory and giving up the challenge in five minutes was as far as you made it. You managed the three experiments but left the crew report in the vehicle and then made a run for the quonset hut and called the Recovery team to resue Jeb.

POI Points = 4+4+0 = 8 points. Time = 5 minutes + 3 minutes recovery Jeb= 00:08

So post it as: 08/00:08

It will cost another 3 minutes for the team to retrive the vehicle that contains the science. Resulting:

POI Points = 4+4+2 = 10 points. Now the time 5 minutes + 3 minutes recovery Jeb + 3 minutes recovery vehicle = 00:11

So post as: 10/00:11

If he has the science experiments with him and the Recovery team is called for Jeb you get: 10/00:08

Orbit seems to be just far enough for the electricity not to feed these monsters. No electric rule will still apply on the way up to orbit so no charge on the batteries or using SAS or reaction wheels. All computer and flight systems are nominal once in orbit. Better pack on solar panels to use once in orbit and charge up those dead batteries. Why orbit? Where else? An orbiting bombing station can rain hell down on KSC to help Jeb scare off the deadly, see-through, brain draining UNKERBAL.

I thik you should have waited until you had some entrants to the first challenge, to be honest... new challenges can take a while to get going, and if you spam too many at once then bad things can happen!

Firstly, one of the two challenges could prove the more popular, and you will find you have to spend a lot of time judging the entrants - Just ask Ziv about that with his Jool-5 Challenge! he has stated it takes a good 30-40 minutes to judge each entrant minimum, and if you get a few entries in a row that's a good couple of hours of your time taken up... which means less time to play :wink:

Secondly, you are assuming people know what you mean with the 'Ungreen' thing... is this a mod? an imaginary monster? This will lead to confusion and people not entering until you explain a bit better!

Please do not take this negatively, your challenges are good, you just need to make everything as plain and simple as you can to get people started, and like in the first challenge you posted, your attempt will help! even if it's not a success... And slow things down a bit, it takes time to do things in KSP :D

Deciphering the description:

* all the KSC POI's what are they?

* Fire is the only thing that will destroy the ungreen. what's that?

* No electrics. No RCS. Does this mean no reaction wheels?

* 30 second fuse timer. what's this?

* get out for EVA and preform surface samples Ok, somewhere in the middle of the text topic changes, now it's about samples.

* Explosions must not scare the monsters towards Jeb, it will need to be exploding close to him. How do you judge what's close or not?

* If you need another vehicle than go back to VAB and launch but cost is 5 minute penalty. The recovery team also needs 3 minutes to pick up the pieces. How do you intend the player should move in general?

also, scoring section tells about POIs and samples, but what about time?

Example: R&D Observatory was as far as you made it and then made a run for the quonset hut by the fuel tanks (fuel for the molitove cocktails).

Ok, so here's time. I deduct that you mean the contender did it in 5 minutes, right?

The problem with this description is that you tell what to do, change topic, then somewhere in the middle "what to do" changes. Also you refer some things like the reader already knows them, while he does not. Try writing a description in steps, like "goal > measurements of goal > means > obstacles > scoring" and try telling it to someone verbally, by voice.
