Let's name Philae's landing site

Rosetta's Philae lander will land on comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, so ESA has given us an opportunity to name the landing site on the comet.

Why am I posting this in General forum? Because I think it would be a cool idea to give the place a name from KSP to promote the game. Also, because not many people come to Science Labs and this has to do with KSP.

Any ideas? Kerbin? Sound rather reasonable. We've got a week for this.

Well the landing site was codenamed "site J" if I'm not mistaken. So perhaps Jool site would be more apt? Jool is pretty iconic in KSP

That being said, ESA is going for the iconic and historic vibe here, so I doubt they'll go with a video game reference :P

"site J" is just a letter. There's a backup site of another name.

Jool is obscure. If we want to use any KSP name, it should be the most recognizable one. What's the most recognizable name of a site KSP has to offer? I think the only chance is Kerbin... or Jebediah.

Thread moved to the Space Lounge.

Although I don't think naming this site 'Kerbal' or something similar would be a likely outcome (after all, ESA is a public organisation that would be promoting a commercial enterprise) I would love to see it actually happen :)

I've specifically placed the thread to General KSP because a relatively tiny proportion of the forumers come to Space Lounge or Science Labs and thus tried to save the whole "let's get forumers to vote" idea from sinking into the abyss. But ok.

Weren't some of the public spacey projecty stuff getting names connected to Star Trek? Like a certain space shuttle? Why would a spot on a celestial body be any different?

If everyone dumps every thread in General KSP Discussion just because it gets them more views then why would we still have the other forums? ;)

On topic, I'm rather unknowing of how these things work, but from my background I foresee problems with this. Then again I could be completely wrong.

Yeah, but the contest lasts a week, and the comet will be there longer than the humanity. At least the thread could've remained in the most visited place until the name is chosen, and then it doesn't matter anymore. It can be transfered into the least popular place. The thread is very specific.

We can try, but it would require one name if we want bombarding ESA with suggestions to work. It would be cool if we got one name and then... rampage. :)

Yes, the Space Shuttle Enterprise was named after the starship Enterprise. But the real and fictional Enterprises were from the same country, and the starship Enterprise was in turn probably named after one of the real USS Enterprises (most likely the carrier that served in WWII). And Star Trek is light-years more famous than KSP.

Also, this contest is not a vote. Spamming the same suggestion won't guarantee it's chosen.

Agreed. If we want our suggestion to be taken seriously, I would highly suggest not naming it something like "Moar boosters" or anything that is related to Kerbal Space Program. Also, the name Enterprise was already in use by the United States Navy long before Star Trek even existed - if anything, Star Treak copied real life, instead of the other way around (The USS Enterprise was also the name of a ship that served in the Revolutionary War). In my opinion, if I was a judge, any references to a popular video game or a popular TV show would be immediately cut, and I wouldn't blame them. They aren't running a fan club, they're running a space program.

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
