Trying to find a smartphone.

I would recomment the Motorola Moto G. It has everything a decent smartphone needs for an awesome price:

-Good 720p Display

-Quick enough quadcore CPU

-1 Gb of RAM

-Will get an update to Android 5.0

-Costs less than 200€

I would choose the 2013 version with a SD Card slot. The 2014 version is worse since its more expensive and has a shorter batterylife due to the larger screen but it has a better camera. The rest is identical to the 2013 version...

Seconded. I have the original Moto G, bought outright SIM-free for £160, and have been very happy with it. It's "got it where it counts" with a good CPU, lovely screen, and is just about the right size. Runs nearly-stock Android, in contrast to say Samsungs that are heavily altered.

I've also had great battery life out of it; this is something that's very user-dependent but for me 48 hours between charges isn't uncommon and I did over 4 days on one charge once or twice.

What's your budget and which country do you live in? If you're in the US, you can buy a new Moto G online for less than $200 (like others said).

You can also *try* to get an Oneplus One for $300, but good luck with that.

Canada, and I'd like to try and keep the budget below $300.

What kind of use do you expect out of it? Do you expect to be doing 3D gaming? If not I'd recommend Moto-E.

Right now the only thing I know I'll be using it for is battlescribe and a few map programs. I imagine I would be downloading a few games for it since it's inevitable.

I live in Canada too. If stupid Motorola sold their phones unlocked here I would be rocking a moto x right now. You can try preorbing the Oneplus One on October 27, but you'll only have 1 hour to do so and there is a limited amount. The Nexus 5 (what I'm using) is pretty good too, but it costs $350 and is almost a year old.

As long as you stick with the lower-end you'll be fine; the only issue I've had is when I tried to install XCOM to test it, which'd have been impractical impossible to play anyway due to screen-size issues. Given the cost here is only about ~$CAD160, you should be able to import a sim-free one for well below the price you're looking at.

Xcom as in 1997 xcom? On a Moto E?

As in the mobile version of 2012 XCOM (that I'd already bought for use on a tablet). I'm surprised in even let me try to download it, but it couldn't finish because it was physically larger than the free space on the internal storage. Given how easy it is to transfer stuff to SD, you shouldn't hit the same problem unless you try something equally stupid/crazy.

That makes more sense.
