FIXED! My Most Accurate SR-71 Blackbird Yet!

Recommended Posts

I practically did this bird with every subsequent version of KSP since they first implemented the SPH; but man, I just can't express my love enough for this delta-winged beauty. Since this version came out, this was all that was on my mind: "Rebuild the Blackbird." I did, and I went through trial and error of getting all the stock parts to look JUUUUST right, to closely match the real deal. Well, in the end, this is my most accurate, and most balanced Blackbird I have ever built. I managed to climb to over 30,000 metres, and managed to get above mach 4 in this, and it has more than enough fuel to circumnavigate Kerbin.

Keep in mind that this bird is still fragile on the tarmac. If you punch it, and try to take off as you normally would, the engines WILL disintegrate, and your outer deltas WILL go on without you. Bring her nose up ever so gently, and let the lift gradually make its way under the wings. One MOOOORE thing! I purposely left the 2 rear fuel tanks closed off to maintain Center of Mass balance, the one that's open will get you very far. Also, the reason I put a cargo bay behind the capsule was to lighten the load. You can replace it with a fuel tank IF you so choose, but it WILL upset the balance a bit. EDIT: I fixed the craft file. Re-DL the file, and you'll be fine. I'm terribly sorry for the inconvenience!

What did you think of my stock replica? Did I do a good job? Does it fly okay? Have problems? Drop a comment below and let me know what you think!

And as always, fly safe!

Yours looks pretty good for a starter. You gotta learn that any surface can be used for the wings, not just the black center line. Of course you'll need to know where to place struts as well, where the parts aren't DIRECTLY connected to other parts. Otherwise, you're on your way. Keep it up, fellow kerbonaut!

Fairly sure mine is structurally sound, the rear end is set up like it is for landings so the gear bounces up and down more (the wings are connected internally with space tape) makes for good suspension, did not want to do external suspension, as far as placement of the wings, i rather have the centre of lift even on the centre of mass, could not get the shape of the SR-71 air intakes to be a reality in KSP so i went with flyability on that part, otherwise my plane is a fairly accurate on the shape.

Btw still cant use yours without mods, just going to download the mod lol, is it near future struts?

Just ignore him. He called you a noob(3 rep bars ahem), threw dirt on your plane and can't even provide embedded pics for us. Just let his engine slowly flame out and be forgotten...just like the F-111

Right, thanks for looking at my comment that way. I try to be nice and provide some tips, and you immediately think I'm some sort of dirtbag. If you think I'm that bad, I'll just pull my stuff from the forums and never provide a replica for you guys.

its alright man i know you meant well and took no offense what so ever, constructive criticism is awesome, how else can you get better at things?

by the way was the part mod you are using for the struts the near future structural mod?

Just tried the new file out works fine :)

really like your wing design, very creative, must have taken a lot of work to get that right, 3d wings can be a pain.

Did not fly like i was expecting though, must say my SR-71 does perform a tad better :P

Wow, super nice! The real Blackbird didn't have that sort of agility, though. Had a wicked turn radius in the hundreds of miles at speed. I like it a lot, though. I'll go and download yours, since you did mine. :)

And I appreciate your criticism on mine, I know it's a bit clunky for trying to do acrobatics, but mine was built mainly for the sole purpose of being a supersonic spyplane.

Thanks for sharing!

i ended up having to clip controls into the nose of the plane to stop it dipping below the horizon in the upper atmosphere, so it handles a bit unrealistically lol, i added some extra yaw control as well because it had nearly none.

did make it so it will fly at 3500+km/h at 25km.

you too man, cant wait to see what you bring out next.

I also saw from your video that your top speed was a little over 1,247 metres/sec (4,489.2 km/hr). Mine clocked out at over 1,500 metres/sec (5,400 km/hr) at 27+ kilometres up.

I was still accelerating after this was taken.

No need to keep bringing up a comment from the front page, since the two people it concerns have moved on and didn't have a problem with it in the first place. Constructive comments are always welcome, but there's no need to stir up trouble where there isn't any.

Cheers,

~Claw

I still don't understand why it is so hard to embed at least 1 pic in the main post? No pics, no clicks.

If you have problems I'll just guide you.

1. Go to imgur.com

2. Log in with facebook/google/whatever

3. Upload your screenshot using one of the methods there(drag and drop, select etc.)

4. Open the uploaded screenie

5. Look for the BBcode link(that's what it's called)

6. Paste that in your post.
