relax the physics warp limits when orbiting close to bodies

Recommended Posts

If you are in a low orbit around a body the warp limit to 1 x is excruciating, can it be relaxed?

I can see that for game play it's nice that it auto limits as you are about to re-enter atmosphere, and I can imagine for physics accuracy there are circumstances where you want to make sure the 'delta t' (or whatever) is not too large. If you are orbiting a moon and it's 15 minutes to a landing maneuver then it's painful and I don't imagine required either by game play or physics.

Are you aware of the physical warp feature? Alt + , or . allows up to 4x in situations when normal timewarp doesn't work (in atmosphere, engine running, kerbal, etc). It's a bit different from regular timewarp as the ship doesn't go "on-rails", instead the physics simulation keeps running.

thanks Red Iron Crown - I wasn't aware of the Mod version of ./,

I just tried a 15km Vall orbit and with Mod. it takes 31/4 = near 8 mins to do 3/4 of an orbit - 8 is much 'better' than 31 - but is there any real reason the regular ./, cannot go to 10x or 20x in these circumstances?

How about... if non-phys time warp is unavailable, switch the time warp bar to be phys time warp (the one with the four arrows, capped at 4x). It's a little silly that people who don't know the key combination to force phys time warp (which are Alt+. and Alt+, by the way) are stuck at 1x when close to (or even landed on!) an airless body.

I think in general, the warp restrictions should be able to be relaxed, but at the same time, you should never run into situations where running high warp makes you do things like smash into a planet without warning, or warp past entering an atmosphere. It's really a bug that those things happen (and one that ought to be fixable in the future).

It would be good if the game automatically slows down at certain points (for example if you're close to smashing into a planet), but it should let you warp to almost any speed if you're in a safe stable orbit.

It would certainly be nice to warp to 100,000X when waiting for a transfer window.

I don't understand why Squad doesn't let you warp past 50X when you're flying in a nice stable orbit, but that it is perfectly okay to warp to 100,000X when you're looking at the craft from the Tracking Station. What's the difference?
