Exploding Wings?!

Recommended Posts

Here are some pics of my Kerbooster fly-back stage coming in to land (stock, no mods).

This is a design I've used numerous times in previous patches, but this is the first time I've flown it using the Spaceplane Plus wing parts from 0.25.

The approach is fairly typical, I overshoot the KSC, make a sharp turn around and glide back.

Just as I flare the nose of the plane for final touchdown, each of the four triangular wing parts explode in quick succession (too fast for me to react to take a pic). The rectangular wing parts have twice as much lift, so the plane still has enough lift to land safely.

Although this didn't prevent me from landing, it was still disconcerting to have parts of my plane exploding around me while I was trying to land! Presumably, this has something to do with the aerodynamic loads on those parts during the landing. It seems that they can handle re-entry and some pretty hard banking turns, but fall off when I make an unpowered glide landing.

Maybe I should add moar struts or something...

I had something similar happen. For some reason they're colliding with buildings.

Not uncommon, actually. I've had only one wing explode like that before, and THAT really sucked. :(

It's a bug in the game, sometimes it happens at high altitudes (6000+ meters) and just obliterates your ship.

Happened to me a lot! Its the one called "structural wing" (now structural wing type A)

Edb94Wk.jpg

It happens when I quicksaved/loaded a lot, and as soon as I return to Kerbin from where-ever. It can happen in space around Kerbin, or it waits until you approach the KSC.

If i try quickloading, the structural wings will start expoding(poof!) again.

It's usually solved for me by restarting the game and then resuming the Kerbin landing.

What's funny, it never happened on my old computer!

Yeah ive encountered this too, at first I thought having wings that clipped into each other was the problem, but I don't think that's anything to do with it now. As everyone's said, restarting the game seems to clear it up. For me it always happens in the last few seconds before landing at the runway, made for some exciting landings!

I have the same issue last night. Really was annoying. The log showed that the wing crashed into the launch pad when I was at 67,000 Altitude.

The more you guys can post about what you're doing during the course of the flight, the better. Also, a quick snapshot of your plane may be helpful. Sometimes it takes a lot of reports to find the common trend, which so far sounds like taking a plane out to Mun or Minmus and back at high warp without save/load/restart.

Not sure if it's also tied to craft configuration in some way. Also, it might not be that the VAB/Runway/Launchpad is moving, but some of the part's colliders. That's why I keep asking for craft pictures. Try thinking about this from other angles and we'll see if we can find the common pieces. :D

Although this is the first time I've heard this...

I've seen one in the Jool system yesterday :(

Cheers,

~Claw

I've had it happen with this:

Unfortunately there's no thread for this issue in the modded install (I run a single mod - Kerbal Engineer)

Apparently the wingtip AV-R8s hit the launch pad while on approach to the runway. That was after some warping in orbit for a kerbal rescue mission.

Don't worry guys. It's just the Kerbal engineers planting explosives on your parts. They do it for a laugh some times so they can watch your pilot scream in horror. You may say they take it too far, but they are just having some fun!
