Dear Colleagues,

STEADLER Engineering Corps has contracted our space agency to plant a flag on Tylo in their honour. Gene Kerman has assigned me as project manager for this particular contract. I am in charge of assembling a team to achieve the following objectives to the best of our abillities:

Primary objectives:

-Plant a flag on Tylo.

-transmit or recover data from space around Vall.

Secondary Objectives:

-Return kerbonauts to Kerbin.

-Plant flag on Vall.

-Recover materials study and surface sample from Tylo.

-Recover materials study and surface sample from Vall.

STEADLER Enginieering Corps has provided us with an advance of 66.667 funds.

We are authorized to use Kerbal Engineer Redux v1.0.

I will be considering applications for the following positions:

Launch Vehicle Engineer *VACANT*

In charge of development of the Launch Vehicle. This will include the Lander/Return Craft.

Lander/Return Craft Engineer *VACANT*

In charge of development of the Lander/Return Craft.

Kerbonaut *VACANT*

Will perform the actual mission. Will perform any tests and test flights requested by other departments.

Mission PLanner *VACANT*

Will advise to achieve an efficient and effective mission profile. The Mission Planner will develop checklists and will give advise on the mathmatical context of the mission.

Only the Mission Planner is authorized to use Kerbal Engineer Redux v1.0. The Mission Planner is also in charge of the science aspect of the mission. He will maximize the science output available within this mission and work closely with the engineers.

Correspondation will occur via the forum.

Send your motivation via PM to me.

As soon as the team is complete we will go from there. We will hold a brainstorm meeting to inventorise any ideas and experiences.

Yours sincerely,

Robje Kerman

Interesting challenge, but... needs a little more fleshing out, really!

Are you going to be passing around a save file, or doing this on a multiplayer server?

Why does this seem to be a team challenge, but for only one team?

This seems more like a request for help for a self-set challenge rather than one for the open forum, if you check out most of the other challenges they are designed to be accomplished by someone playing on their own rather than the sometimes messy sharing of a save file/setting up a server...

Please, don't take this negatively, I think it could be a good challenge with a bit more planning (and maybe read the http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/24898-Challenge-Submission-Guide, if you haven't already) :)

Thx for you feedback but i politely disagree:) to me it seemed obvious to pass around save files.

And you can call this whatever you want (Co-op=single team team play), but i think it's challengiing to tackle such a project with others.

I have indeed read the rules and i did not take it negatively;)

Kind regards!

It certainly is a real-life challenge!

If I were setting this challenge, I would try to get people who already use a team-chat server (steam, Skype, Crossfire, AIM or similar) on-board to make the discussion a bit easier... with the forum, *bad things* can happen on rare occasion, such as the crash of April 13 that I've heard so much about (but missed by nearly whole year!) - Squad do look into upgrading the forum from time to time as well, which can sometimes have unforeseen consequences (which is why the last update got rolled back...).

Another problem you might run into is save file corruption; don't ask me how, but I sometimes manage to corrupt my own save files enough without sharing them with anyone else haha

And as there are some multiplayer servers about which seem reasonably stable (Dark Multiplayer Server is the one I hear most about from the Forum Steam Chat) that could be an alternative to uploading and downloading a save file a whole load of times... again, just suggestions :)

Where is the challenge? Making up for people who didn't do their job?

How often do you think the guy that ends up with his footprint on the moon is the same guy that designed the lifter or planned the mission or spent hours working out what optimum payload was??? Never ..

The challenge here is working with what you get given.

If the mission director says you only get one launch the the lifter guy has to come up with something that can heft 100t into orbit.

This means the lander guy has to keep his lander bellow 20t etc...

And all of this means Jeb has to fly a 600t monstrosity into orbit

It's not often in real life because nobody can do it by him/her self.

I can do it by my self in the game, there is no comparison.

How often do astronauts execute burns by themselves? never! Then why didn't you allow mechjeb? How often do astronauts fly in rockets designed by armatures? never! Then why didn't you require a Ph.D in engineering to even qualify for this challenge?

Let's not forget that this is a game so the need for a PhD is negated by the fact the functional mechanics of component parts are already done for you. Otherwise KSP Call of Duty and all other games would be pretty pointless. The same goes avionics and navigation aids.

Like you say. You can do it all your self in KSP. I think we all can. Otherwise we wouldn't be on this forum looking for a challenge.

Maybe this one isn't for you. If you fancy Doing it all yourself I would recommend the Constellation 3 part challenge.

Let's not forget that this is a game so the need for multiple people to work on one mission is negated by the fact that functional mechanics of component parts are already done for you, and many many other simplifications. Otherwise KSP ot Call of Duty and all other game would be pretty pointless. The same goes for avionics and navigation aids.

This sounds interesting, but I think you should take a different approach.

How about instead of making this only open to a single team, you allow several competing teams? And what about creating multiple categories (i.e. one for modded games, one for normal KSP, etc.) Just getting anything on Tylo is challenge enough- but there's no reason you can't add a little competition to the mix. :)

Personally, I only play with modded KSP at this point (you won't catch me dead without FAR and RealFuels, and I use Procedural Parts to get around the need to ahve a million memory-hogging fuel tank parts in my catalog). But if there were a modded category, I would be quite interested in taking the role of a Mission Planner or Launch Vehicle Engineer...

Regards,

Northstar
