Hello everyone!

Welcome to the Kerbal Racing Federation's 2nd Formula K Championship!

Formula K is the ultimate racing category of Kerbal motorsport.

Only the best can make it, and only the best of the best can win.

Do you have what it takes?

About the competition:

The scoring system is rather simple:

1st: 10pts

2nd: 8pts

3rd: 6pts

4th: 5pts

5th: 4pts

6th: 3pts

7th: 2pts

8th: 1pt

<8th: 0pts

Reigning champ is GROOV3ST3R.

Please note: If you participated in the previous championship for more than one race, you must design a new car.

Races:

Race One - CLOSED

Race Two

Race Three

Below are the Regulations.

The cars must be built to these regulations.

Yes, they are strict, but it ensures that the competition is close.

REGULATIONS FOR FORMULA K CARS:

Command / Structure:

1. Command

1.1. Must be driven by a Kerbal in an EAS-1 External Command Seat.

1.2. Only 1 Kerbal and 1 seat are permitted.

2. Structure.

2.1. Kerbal must be safe from front and side impacts, and safe from rolling.

2.2. Minimum weight of vehicle is 0.9t with EMPTY RCS tanks. (see Powertrain: 2)

2.3. Main body must be created from Pocket I-Beams and at least 1 1x1m metal plate.

Powertrain:

1. Must be powered by four (4) RoveMax Model M1. No more, no less.

1.1. All wheels may be powered and steerable.

2. One (1) FL-R10 RCS tank is permitted, along with two (2) Place-Anywhere 7 RCS ports.

Aerodynamics:

1. Any small control surfaces are allowed. You are permitted to put the files from <0.24's Small Control Surface back into 0.25 for this challenge. Limit of ten (10) individual surfaces.

All surfaces must be locked.

Races and entry:

Races will start from a standing start, and using the MET timer, racers will complete one timed lap of the circuit.

Each competitor must record their lap with the PersistentTrails plugin.

On entry to the competition, racers will need to provide a screenshot of their vehicle in the editor, along with a name of their company/team and the designation of their car. Sponsors are permitted.

In each race, 3 screenshots are required:

- MET Start Time

- MET Finish Time

- PersistentTrails track.

This will verify your lap time and your route, to check if you've cut the corners.

Using the grey brick walkways as part of the track is permitted, but using the grass is not.

You must start your lap perpendicular to the start/finish line.

At the closure of each round, total points will be tallied. At the closure of the final race, a Top 3 will be appointed and they will be able to receive an image to place in their signature, if they wish.

REGULATIONS FOR OPEN CLASS CARS:

- No part mods are permitted.

- Infinite RCS is banned.

- Wheel power only, maximum of 4 wheels.

- Must be driven by a Kerbal in a seat.

- No SAS or ASAS.

Link to PersistentTrails is here. Thanks to SirJodelstein and Snjo for an amazing plugin.

I hope to see many people join.

This thread is for discussion, car designing tips, rule discussions and possible changes, car releases, and then the races.

If you would like to submit a track, please title your post 'Track Submission' or similar and have an image of the outline in spoiler tags.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks,

Kyrian.

After the conclusion of Race Two, all competitors using SAS and ASAS must redesign their vehicles to remove those systems. One screenshot of the updated car is necessary.

As for the "OP must show that challenge is possible" rule, I will enter all the races.

Hello again Kyrian! The BWI are signing up again for the second year's race-and it looks like we got here first...somehow. Anyway, without further ado here's our car for the season:

This little fellow is the BWI 'Bug' and it's totally not a re-purposed mun rover... actually, it isn't. It just started to look like one halfway through building so I slapped on the satellite dish to complete the look.

xdV3tLB.png

It weighs 2.3 tons, so even minus the weight of the whole RCS tank it's still over the minimum weight.

And the two RCS thrusters on the back.

Well that about does it-let me know if I broke any rules (I seem to remember that happening a lot when building the racer for the first one) as soon as possible so I can fix them.

manni01, there will be. In PersistentTrails you can record a layout and share the file. That's what we'll be doing.

randomness5555, great to see you back, however I would really really suggest a redesign. That thing looks like it'll fall over any second :-)

After having their initial prototype knocked back by the stewards (:D), Team Kerbodyne Racing now presents the Kerbodyne KZ2:

(just a Stayputnik on the back to be subtracted for the weight calculation)

EDITED TO ADD:

A minor mishap during practice...

Just to make sure: there are no wing pieces in there, but there are several types of control surfaces. Not sure if you're limiting it to "small control surfaces" or small "control surfaces". If necessary, I could swap each one for a pair of the smallest surfaces, but I'm not sure what the purpose of that would be...

Is the roll cage adequate? The rear battery gives a bit of extra head protection.

I'll be joining in here shortly. Just gotta uninstall a few mods, and build a Kar.

(I'm racing for Kerlington Model Rockets and Paper Products, BTW.) Just kidding. :D

I'll see if one of the companies I work for will sponsor this vehicle...

I'm still wondering about docking mode. Is it a must? because I can press H when in normal staging mode and it'll do the rcs trick for me so... Docking mode isn't required??

Docking mode isn't required (in practice, anyway; I don't write the rules, but I'm not reading them as forbidding normal mode driving), using it just allows you to have the RCS auto engage whenever you accelerate instead of needing to hit H.

OTOH, not using docking mode allows for active aerodynamics; the Kerbodyne car is built so that the rear spoiler lowers during acceleration and raises during braking.

You can tune wing angles and wheel camber/caster as much as you want, however if you do a major chassis modification you will need to show the old and the new. If it's a near-complete car redesign you can simply re-release your car as [CarName]b.

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
