Opacity masks for Unity.

I did not really understand this, could you explain it a little better please? Also, is there no way of doing this right in Unity?

If you want specific information then ask specific questions. What I said is exactly what you need to do. PS means Photoshop. GIMP is a free PS alternative.

I'm assuming you speak english and understand bit depth, and various image formats.

The only other thing I can think of is that you're used to a Max workflow where every texture has a separate file. In KSP the colour/diffuse map uses its alpha channel (if present) for specularity or transparency.

On my FusTek Station Parts, the warning stickers on the hatch doors are irregular in shape, so I use RGBA PNG textures for the sticker graphics themselves. In Unity, I then used the KSP/Alpha/Translucent shader to made the background region outside the stickers transparent.

You can see the results for yourself in the first and second screenshots below:
