Rail Gun

I was lurking on the exchange and stumbled upon and old rail gun design by Bleekosa and came up with my own rail gun.Uses the cargo bays to make a sleek design that can be easily attached to ships. Its 100% stock and shoots around 165 m/s depending on the shot and can be increased by lengthening the barrel. It comes with 4 shots and they are quite accurate in Kerbin atmosphere. All in all about 68 parts and 20k funds with 4 shots

*small improvements upped muzzle velocity and lowered part count to 68 changes have been made*

Hot keys are 1:fire gun

2-5:ready shot 1-4

6- open bay doors for maintenance or reloading

I remember making a rail gun quite a while ago...

It used quite a similar (nearly identical) design, but the rounds couldn't do any damage. That's why the naval battle forum mostly abandoned railguns: they're complexity and part count penalty are too much for their effectiveness.

I'll have some pics up of that old ship.

I agree they are more of a novelty item just for show. But if a good design and a good ammunition or used as a primer to the conventional weapons they could prove very effective along with the regular weapons
