Scythe Mk5 - Light SSTO Dropship

My mech is my dropship. It's awesome using he robotics to control the horizontal & vertical velocity. If I added some rotation on the neck I could control the whole craft with just the neck robotics.

It's also rocking your VTOL engine design

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to clown_baby again.

Damn it!

I know you love stock, and hopefully one day IR will be stock. But the robotics really add a whole new dimension to these types of craft

I've got a feeling it will, I mean it slots into the stock game so nicely. Multiplayer is my biggest wish though, that's something I'm REALLY looking forward to. :D

Awesome work, Cupcake! Love your ships!

Having recently seen Interstellar, I'm wondering if with your skills you might try your hand at creating versions of the Ranger and Lander from that movie. Your style and aesthetic is already VERY close to the designs from that film! :D

Thanks man! :) I'm not sure if I'll be able to those ships justice to be honest. :P With my designs the function kind of dictates the form and I don't think I'll do a very good job working the other way round. Sorry.

Well done you, have a cookie! :D Very pretty picture too! Just out of curiosity what happened on the way home?

I wasnt efficient getting into mun orbit (Retrograde orbit) and might have used up too much fuel. Might try again with joystick just to see how one might fly an ssto with one

Minmus is a pretty good training ground for getting to know the ship, it might be worth running a few missions there just to get a feel for it. :) Also while I'm here...

Craft file's coming tommorow, night night...

I tried today. I was left with even less fuel to go home. I forget to drop the tanks of jet fuel. Should i just drop them when i turn my rockets on?

Hmm, something doesn't sound right. Can you describe the steps you're taking during your mission? Cheers. :)

I begin rising till 1.5 km then i turn 45 degrees until i hit 2.5 km. I then turn completely 90 degrees to gain speed. I have to push the pitch up a bit to kep altitude until im at orbital velocity (2200 mps). When my jet goes out i tilt 45 degrees and burn till i have a good apogee. I then boost from apogee to get a stable orbit. By now i drop my tanks because i realize they were empty for a good part of the flight up. For my minmus trip i did a around 1000 mps burn to minmus. My capture takes some effort, but i don't know how much Dv i used to stop. By the time im landed my tanks have about 5 units of fuel left.

Thanks

Oh, I think I see the problem. The pitch over point is 15km, not 1.5km! Also have you got the B9 pack installed? There have been issues with the turbo jets being nerfed with this mod. :sealed:

You can also try another ascent profile, I used this one with the Pixie and it should work with the Scythe too.

Straight up to 15km - Pitch over to 45* - Pitch flat to the horizon at 30km - At 40km hold this altitude and build up speed, you'll eventually push past obital volocity and get an Apoapsis of about 140-180km.

Anyway, let me know you get on.

Doh! I meant 15 km :P. I play stock when flying these. I tried this ascent but could only get stable at 35km. I dropped the tanks as soon as the oxi was dry. I landed with around 120 units of fuel left on the mun, but i could not get back to orbit. You might want to cover these kind of ascents in your next masterclass vid. I can record my entire flight if you want.

Thanks

Thanks for that. :) Don't worry about recording the flight though, that's a lot of work! I'll cover the ascent in detail during the next tutorial video and hopefully it'll solve any issues you're having. Cheers.

Well i tried yet again and made a successful trip to minmus!

Thanks for helping me along the way! You should use the interstellar visual pack. It looks amazing. Plus there's music from interstellar that sounds awesome.

Wow that does look awesome! I think there's a wee bit of room of improvment on the landing but other then that well done! You might also want to try the new Pixie, it'll give you a bit more range compared to the Scythe. :)

this is gonna sound dumb, but whenever i try to launch your craft, they are glued to the pavement. I can't launch the spectre mk2 at all. I can launch the scythe mk5, but only after I drop the tanks. ideas? 0.90

EDIT: nevermind. KJR was having issues with 3.0.1. dev version of dll fixed it.

Sweet, let me know if you run into any more issues. Incidentally I've got a new light SSTO in the works. I'm aiming for a similar level of performance to the Pixie Mk2 (Laythe & back) but with a sleeker, nicer looking design. :)
