Does this thing have an abort system? I know that that is kind of a stupid question but I couldn't seem to see it from the images.

The full spacecraft will yes. But this is just an incomplete capsule test. This is nothing more then a regular payload in a satellite fairing, the proper spacecraft will have a slim and small fairing with a launch escape tower.

As far as the low cost, yep labor costs are cheaper in India. BUT also, the research and development costs are low since most of it has already been done by the U.S. and other countries. Now is just a matter of putting existing tested and proven components together. It is way more expensive to be the pioneer.

What is wrong with your layout?

Besides, they are not using an existing craft and not all knowledge is public, so yes, it is a tad easier to do, but it is still rocket science and really, really hard to do right.
