Tips on landing SSTO's B9, NEAR.

Recommended Posts

I saw Scott Manley in one of his videos with landing his B9 shuttle he used to in the upper atmosphere slide the shuttle to the left and right and so on to shake off some speed. Will this apply to a large craft like mine?

That is about how the real shuttle did it, giant "S" turns in the upper atmosphere to bleed off speed. I do something like it myself with my craft in DRE with FAR. I like to skipped up and down through 25-35km till I burned off enough speed to be below mach 6.

In any ship, to slow an aircraft you need to dissipate energy. S-turns (alternating left and right banking turns) are one good way of doing this; the efficacy will depend on how sharply your craft is capable of doing them. Deliberate sideslipping will wash off some speed through enhanced drag, but not as much as a good turn.
