The phobos monolith doesn't even look that odd though, it just freaked out people that don't know what 'monolith' means in geology. It's like claiming aliens have visited earth because of Uluru.

The Mars monolith is also pretty unimpressive when you view it from above. It does have a rectangular shape to it from one side but the back is oblong and typical of any other boulder.

Countless tourists visit Australia because of it - but maybe aliens are a bit more sensitive towards indigenous people?
