My AGUs are not working?

Recommended Posts

Okay, so i'm having a problem where the AGUs are not grabbing anything- wether it's my SSTO parked underneath, or the bottom of the ocean that my sub's trying to attach to. Why is this? It says in the wiki:

Operation is simple. Its state toggles between Armed or Disarmed. While disarmed, it behaves like any other part. Once armed, approach perpendicularly to the target surface at no more than a few m/s and the extended claw will automatically grab anything it collides with (or that collides with it), docking the target to the current vessel.[1] To undocking from the target, right-click the AGU and choose Release.

Which I do, yet it always says "locked" before it even hits the object- and it doesn't grab on. What am I doing wrong?

And don't anyone else give me that "building submarines is the problem - you're using KSP wrong" stuff :P this is a legit problem.

Planet surfaces can't be grabbed. When grabbed, the grabbed object and the vehicle with the AGU will become one vehicle and you can manipulate it. Can't do that with a planet. If you want to anchor yourself underwater, try KAS, there is an anchor part.

oh, all right i was trying to do it stock :( Weird that it doesn't work for a planet.

Well, nothing sinks in stock unless it's being pushed under the surface by thrust... so, there's no 'really heavy part' to sink.

Not entirely accurate. Any fuel tank from the x200-32 and up will sink. The bigger the tank, the faster it sinks. However, even using one structural intake (the new thin ones) can cause a big-orange to float, and can give a lot of buoyancy to the SLS tanks.

The most maneuverable sub I built so far uses a big orange for the body (and fuel), and two big orange tanks as pontoons. One basic engine on back, one on top (pointing up), and one structural intake. It also had some other doodads (which cause it to want to float more), but that's all the functional stuff. It's controllable and easily submersible.

Cheers,

~Claw
