How do you fix bad FPS

Recommended Posts

Hello my name is TheAnimePug and i do youtube but my ksp vids are not as good as i want them because of bad fps that is weird because its the only game that has this on my computer so is there any way (with changing game codes or mods) to fix the teribble fps?

My theorie is that the game is coded inefficiently and that makes it run bad but idk

Specs of your system would probably help :/

1.KSP is indeed a performance hungry game but with a very good system you should be able to do it with 30+ frames

2.Your harddrive might be slow (in combination with fraps), do you have 2 harddrives ?

3.What program do you use, fraps is known for intense performance needs

Specs: 4,00 GB ram (pretty bad)

Intel core I3

64 bit

2 disks

disk 1: 120 GB

Disk 2: 760 GB

Game is downloaded on the second disk

Idk what my video card specs are

Ive seen multible people with better pc's getting the sme problem with the exact same problem letting me to believe its the game's fault

could it have effect if (idk if so) im running 32 bits game on 64 bit computer?

I use fraps but the fps is teribble without it to

would getting a better video card fix my roblem?

The RAM is probably an issue, since the x86 (32-bit) version of the game can use up ~ 3.5 Gb, plus you need space for the OS and recording software. Are you running anything else in the background?

i3's are only a dual core, so the OS + Recorder + KSP may be putting a lot of strain on it. You're also not telling us what the processor speed or any GPU info so... /shrug Really not a lot that can be said here.

Pretty much.

Anyway there's a few things that can affect KSP performance.

Lack of GPU power. This will lead to poor framerates on the menu screen and when flying low part count ships. KSP's not super-demanding in this respect but it is a 3D game. Solution is to reduce graphical detail and/or resolution, or get a better graphics card.

Poor graphics drivers. Same symptoms, solution is to get better drivers.

"Water lag", which I think is a particular case of lack of GPU power. This will lead to poor performance when looking at Kerbin but good performance when looking at the sky. Solution is to create a custom terrain detail preset in settings.cfg and reduce the detail values for the oceans.

Physics lag. This will lead to slowdown with high part-count ships. Framerate will actually be OK until the part count gets extreme but the timer will be yellow and the "Physics Time Ratio" in the debug stats will be less than 1x. Solution is to get a faster processor or use lower part-count ships.

If you're video editing, there is one more option: fix the slowdown in editing. Depending on the exact issue this might work more or less well; a recording affected by physics lag can be simply sped up but one affected by lacking graphical power not so much.

Well it might not be the best setup for this task but it should work with acceptable framerates.

I expect your graphics card to be the major issue.

But im afraid you need to tune some settings down and stick to rockets with less parts.

The code is "possibly" not optimized but the loads of stuff KSP itself got to render, calculate etc. is performance hungry. I wont say KSP is coded inefficent.

Turn down graphics and try again if it gets better. another thing is, fraps recording on the hdd that your game is on seems kinda unpretty.

Fraps writes and game reads, doesnt work so perfectly :)

i3 Processer is also a source of your bottleneck. The i3 isn't the best gaming cpu out there, not even close. Odds are you have an old GPU that is not helping matters any either. To be honest you have what I would consider near the minimum to run KSP.

Not sure if you've down-tuned your settings, but if you reduce Pixel Light Count (all the way down to 0 if you want) it tends to improve FPS, especially when terrain is in view. Shadows and shading become a little... weird... but for me, at least, it helps performance a ton, especially when terrain is in view.

I'm not sure there's a whole lot you can do without upgrading.

The usual performance related stuff like Nvidia/AMD optimization guides

http://www.tweakguides.com/ATICAT_1.html

http://www.tweakguides.com/NVFORCE_1.html

turn off background tasks when running KSP with tools like gameboost or jetboost, and the lowest possible graphics settings in KSP that's about all you can do

The problem is your I3 chip, KSP does it's physics in really inefficient ways entirely on the CPU, an I3 isn't really up to the job.

maybe when Unity 5 comes out we'll get physics on the GPU and maybe Squad will get round to overhauling the truly awful way physics is handled in this game eventually...
