KSP Space Shuttle Megathread!

Space shuttles are, in my opinion, the second hardest thing in KSP. the hardest is a Laythe SSTO. But anyway, post your Space Shuttles here!

I'd say I'm impressed, but that's superfluous when it's you zekes :-)

I am surprised you think a Laythe SSTO is harder though - the balance problems of something like the US Shuttle has always put me off even going near the design.

SSTLAB(Single Stage to Laythe And Back) is easy compared to that patchwork shuttle

I can be blunt about a shuttle - but getting 10 km/s D/V in a spaceplane is not really my thing... too delicate for me

Um, is this a challenge or just a show-of-your-spaceship thread? If the latter, maybe should be in the main dicussion or the Mission Reports... or simply just the rocket builders, where most people go to show off their ships

Think he meant 'Hardest possible' - I think there have been various challenges an attempts at it, but they have fallen just short of gaining orbit for some reason or other... apart from one, and I can't currently remember who pulled it of now! >.<

You want to check out some of Overfloater's work - he seems to have the hobby of making rediculous spaceplanes that can seemingly go anywhere... when ARM came out he just retro-fitted a tow-bar to one of his existing designs and grabbed one that way! (looks for a link...)

There is actually a mod that makes shuttles infinitely easier: Dtobi's space shuttle engine mod. Though the mod is under new management, it includes a TON of engines, specially designed and coded, to fire through the center of mass. This allows you to build true shuttle replicas, instead of a spaceplane trying to keep the rocket it's attached to vertical.

Laythe SSTO is hard? But I do it all the time!

Duna SSTO is a bit harder than Laythe, the rest of the planets are even harder. Tylo & Eve are impossible as far as i can tell, Moho SSTO is probably the hardest mission in the game (accomplished by Stochasty, later by Mesklin (mission reports can be found in the K-Prize challenge)).

Zekes, does my shuttle qualify as a Shuttle?

I find the standard configuration uselessly hard

It is as efficient as possible, considering there has to be a plane on the rocket.

Yes, it does. That's awesome!

Also, I launched STS-04 last night.... one final unmanned test of the shuttle. STS-01 and -03 were catastrophic failures, so I reverted the ship to STS-02 status and went from there. It was nominal, which was good.

I agree with overfloater. Laythe ssto's are way easier. I'm currently almost done with a 6 ton payload to laythe ssto (I'm making a video about it

A space shuttle built in the early days after the release of .25.

Orbit capable, surprising for something shuttle style that I built.

Let's just say it's never had a traditional landing, by which I mean a survivable landing.
