Create parts inside the game?

Recommended Posts

This suggestion is for creating parts in the game, like a "design office" building, a "simple" CAD/CAE simulator for creating custom parts, adding textures, meshes, the whole thing, and applying loads and stresses to the parts, color display for the "interesting/usefull" measurements/forces/loads and so on, and then make them available to the SPH or VAB to build the craft.

I'm thinking this could be really time consuming work:confused:, but also I`m wondering if it's make any sense in the first place, or even if it's viable.

Thanks for your thoughts!

I don't think it should be inside the game. I need more memory space for my mods!

But...I think it would be nice as an accompany program, kinda like the builder kits for bethesda games. Simple, plug and play, use pre-fab models + textures with options to load custome ones, editing values, etc. It would make an already moddable game to be even more moddable!

This would be considered as procedural parts. The Devs explicitly said that they are against procedural parts, since they remove the challenge of designing spacecraft from the game (the challenge being that you can only use the parts you have available to design a craft). Therefore, the chance of this becoming a feature is nonexistent, both now and in the future.

It would be nice however to be able to build parts from subcomponents - so as an example instead of complete engines a set of combustion chambers, nozzle shapes, turbo pumps would be available based on tech level - you would then be able to customer design an engine so to speak but you would be limited to a set of configs more than having additional parts. This could be set up using the tweakables.

Just a thought. Probably no more memory need for this than already exists and it would not be procedural so to speak. Im not a coder any more so shout out if Its a miss. Now, if KSP was coded in Dataflex, Cobol, or Pascal then I would probably attempt it myself - To bad I gave up my legacy borland compiler suite 20 years ago lol.

The memory issue is a big concern that could be a potential show stopper. But I think that the "builders kit" approach is kinda limiting, I'm thinking more about making custom parts for very custom designs, something like a part of fuselage that is a uniquely shaped fuel tank (I'm thinking in a Airbus A400, or an airliner), so you would need to know very well what are you doing.

Another approach could be of procedural of almost every part, there is already procedural wings, and a lot of engines, but it would need something like procedural landing gear, and especially procedural fuselage in which you could adapt custom shaped fuel tanks. The "simulation" part would be something like a FAR analysis, but more graphical (I don't know if this is even possible).

Well, considering that the parts created would not be considered stock parts, it wouldn't be much different than mods that we can get now. Dev doesn't want procedural parts as a feature for the stock game for said reason, but if they give people a separate tool that, essentially, allow people to mod parts with a little less coding involve, it would just be like how people can always alt + F12 for cheating. Those are tool available that are not intended for normal play, but that is up to player choice in how they want to play.

That said, I don't think we would see such a thing anytime soon, considering that it would take away a lot of time from polishing the base game.
