Even worse though.

Hatbat and his youtube series.

It will be ruined.

Also means there will be no Spirit of Kerbin Video

Dev 1: 'I saw some posters making an awesome youtube series! Should we promote them?'

Analyst 1: 'NO! PROFITS DOWN! NEW FEATURES! MOARZZZZ!!'

Dev 2: 'But the series...'

Analyst 2: 'BUT THE SERIES? WHAT SERIES? MORE FEATURES!'

...

:P

I think you're all freaking out about nothing - it's not going to break ships, they're just adding some new parts..... I really think it's nothing.

Thats why I wish the Op had not started this thread.

I have a bad tendency to look at the worst possible scenario.

So when he/she mentioned strut and fuel fix, my mind imminently went to craft file incompatibility.

That being said you may be right, but that means we now have to wait weeks maybe months before Squad lets us know what will happen.

I know the feeling. The same happens to me when I see the govt. announcing a new construction project or whatever.

But, in my experience, saves are more durable than people expect. If they still use the same method of recording the position of either end of a strut, things should work.

Also, last time, save breaking was announced well in the middle of the development cycle. (And in the end, they made a save converter. The Devs, or modders may do the same this time in the unlikely event saves will break.)

And remember, it may be not perfect, but you can hold on to older versions if mods break, or need more than a little fixing for the latest one. I should fix that outdated version of spherical tanks I'm still running...

Like I told Zeke you may be right and Im just over reacting.

I would just hate to see my crafts that I worked so hard to build suddenly not work anymore

don't cry guys... i've saved my best crafts since i startet playing ksp... and i never (NEVER!) reused them! :D

in every version i build new crafts... so just start again. building is the best thing in ksp :D. so my crafts and stations gets better in every version.

honestly who cares if a save game breaks? yea sure, they havnt broken since I think what .21 or .22? this game is in development and if a save breaks, it breaks. pick up the legos and start again, isnt that the fun of space legos anyway?

I restart every time a new update comes out so I dont care about saves, though I sometime use the same craft files. You can usually keep old craft files and just test them at release. Most times things work fine and may only need a few adjustments. Recreating the whole thing is not usually required.

Such whinge! Much Moan!

I think it will break saves, but why do so many of you who have been about longer than me not know you can just copy your 0.25 game folder to another place on your hard-drive and carry on as you were?! This way, you can still finish off what you were doing without worrying about broken craft files, AND try out some of the new stuff!

I fully expect someone to figure out how to migrate saves over to 0.90, that has always been so in the past even when an update "broke" saves. Craft rarely break with updates. Not sure if the strut/fuel line thing will break them, they might need manual editing to work with the new stuff.

Too much falling sky in this thread.

Why is squad even considering changing the strut and fuel flow?

its fine as it is

Because the code is a complete mess with special-case handling everywhere for struts and fuel lines, and by creating a standardized class to handle both of these part types, they make it much easier to add other types of parts with similar behavior, and to debug if something goes wrong.

As to your general worry about save-game breaking: it probably won't happen, and it's kind of what you get when you buy a game which is still in development. If this happened for the release version, you might have a point, but for now, you pretty much have to live with the possibility that any patch may break everything. If you really want to be sure, just copy your Kerbal Space Program folder, and you'll have a 0.25 version you can go back to. I know I'll be starting over in 0.90.

I honestly don't care if it breaks save files, my computer can't handle vessels made of more than 250 parts anyways. Not like it'll destroy days of work for me. (planned on starting a new sandbox in .90 anyhow)

I fully expect that at least one update between now and when the game is "finished" will break craft files. Heck, anytime they go in and edit a part, or tweak a node it can make that part not work with old crafts.

Its called progress.

I never said anything about game save.

I only play on sandbox I could care less about having to start a new game.

Okay, I gotta ask. So many of you are saying "Just don't update."

So HOW does one "just not update"? Steam updates the game without any action on my part. In fact, I usually find out that an update has gone live when I start up the game all unsuspecting and Steam auto-magically updates. By which time it's too late to save the old version...and if I'm not really paying attention (frequently I go unload the dishwasher, or rotate the laundry, or some other quick household chore, while the game is loading) I may not notice the update until after I load the save...in which case it may be impossible to take that save back to the previous version.

So how do I STOP Steam from updating until *I* decide I am ready for it?

(Yeah, this is probably a stupid question with an obvious answer to 'gamer' types. But I come at this from the 'rocket' angle...dV and gravity slingshots are straightforward and 'intuitively obvious' to me, but Steam is an arcane mystery.)

Open up Steam, go to Library find KSP and click on Properties...

Possibly "Only update this game when I launch it" combined with not using the Steam launcher, but instead make a shortcut directly to the KSP executable file under C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Kerbal Space Program?

You can not. Even opting out of updates just works until you try to launch the game.

Squad makes at least one older version available on Steam. It works just like opting in for beta.

You can also just make a copy of the game and place it out of the Steam folder somewhere.

The above will not work with all games but Squad made sure you did not need Steam to launch the game.

The 0.90 (Why not 0.9?) update is the start of the Betas. Why not start fresh? For the past couple updates I have just gone to http://wiki.kerbalspaceprogram.com/wiki/Campaigns and spent the hours doing most of them in order. Sometimes starting from ashes is the best to do. In career/science you get to start with the pod & SRB and not with SSTLs (SingleStageToLaythe) that you have. Change is good.
