Aircraft problem taking off

Recommended Posts

I tried to make a A-10 replica, but it just won't take off. The CoM is in the center and the CoL is right behind it.The only way I can get it off the ground is to go off the runway but even then it still won't take off.

Can someone tell my why this happens?

It sounds like your rear wheels are too far back. Slide them up just behind the center of mass, and this will allow the plane to pivot on that fulcrum, when you pitch up.

EDIT: It dawns on me that the rear wheels on an A-10 don't have any room to move. You should see if you can adjust the fuel load to move the CoM just in front of the wheels.

Also, some pics of your ship would help a lot.

I find myself wondering how the pitch authority is ... the A-10's wheels are in a tricycle configuration with the rear ones under the wings. Do note that you may need some wing reinforcement so things don't bend too much ... not that that would cause this particular issue.

The A-10 is a REALLY simple plane and is surprisingly long, which most people fail to realize when they make one.

If you look at that craft notice how the gear are set right at the rear of the main wings. Which is pretty close to how the real A-10 is setup.

Perhaps you're lacking lift? From the picture Hodo posted, it seems that perhaps you could add bigger wings or more engines. That usually fixes my planes.

That is my aircraft I posted and it takes off fine. It is really light weight and the wings are quite massive for the size.

My strong instinct on this is that due to the design of the A-10, your engine nacelles are above the centreline. The effect is that your engine thrust is pushing the nose down, because then engines are higher up on the plane than the CoM - the same as if you put one engine on a wingtip the plane would try to turn in circles instead of going straight forward.

If your engines are up high like this, that's your problem. To fix, you'll need to work out a way to shift your CoM up, or your CoT down, or angle the nacelles so that they point towards the CoM - note this last will make your plane fly on a permanent upward pitch.
