KSP System Requirements

Recommended Posts

These are official system requirements for KSP found in steam, as per 0.90 Windows version:

MINIMUM:
OS:Windows Vista
Processor:Core 2 Duo
Memory:3 GB RAM
Graphics:SM3 512MB VRAM
Hard Drive:1 GB HD space

RECOMMENDED:
OS:Windows 7
Processor:Core i3
Memory:4 GB RAM
Graphics:SM4 1GB VRAM
Hard Drive:2 GB HD space

Now, let's dive into facts.

1. Freshly-downloaded KSP 0.90 takes 3.03 Gb on your HDD. No more and no less.

2. Freshly-downloaded KSP 0.90 uses 2 Gb RAM. And I mean STOCK 0.90 game, without any mods. You may ask "Hey bio, why is it so important?" Because 32-bit versions of Windows cannot address more than 2 Gb RAM for a single 32-bit process (Memory limits for Windows releases) without manual editing of the boot options. And there is a forum thread that confirms that.

Note: I know that you can reduce your RAM usage by lowering your texture resolution. This is clearly NOT a solution, because eventually you'll hit 2 Gb barrier and your game will crash.

CPU specs - you might want to move Core i3 to the minimum, I think.

Sadly, but I cannot look at video card requirements (I have a GTX Titan), but somehow I feel that 512 Mb is not enough at all.

I also cannot look at Mac and Linux specs.

What do I mean is: Squad, you need to review KSP system requirements.

First, you should drop 32-bit Windows support. I mean OS, not build. The minimum specs should list "Windows Vista x64, 4 Gb RAM" with a notice: "While the game can run on 32-bit OS, we cannot guarantee its stability or provide detailed support." Of course, it can - and it undoubtedly will - cause some uproar. But it must be done, sooner or later. Sooner is better.

And, of course, update the HDD requirements. There is absolutely no way for the game to use only 1 Gb of HDD space.

I'm currently running 0.90 on a 2GHz Core 2 Duo with 4GB of RAM and a 128MB video card. It is painful at times but it works, so I think the minimum CPU/GPU is still ok (not sure about RAM, HDD space should definitely be revised).

I'm a bit reluctant to comment on the 32-bit OS thing as I haven't got one to test with, but I do know that KSP is large address aware and should be able to use 3GB of memory addresses; I don't recall offhand if that requires some boot.ini trickery to make work on 32-bit Windows.

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
