How does the science limit work?

If you don't upgrade your R&D building, it says your science limit is 100. But I've gone over that a couple of times and it hasn't capped. I had assumed it was a limit on how much science you can hold. Is it just a limit on the amount you can spend on a single tech, or is this a bug?

It's about what you can research. Once you hit the limit you can't go further down the right of the science tree, so to speak.

It's the amount you can spend on a single tech. When you advance on the tech tree far enough, you will see the next tier faded out and it will tell you that you can't buy it until you upgrade your R&D building. You can gather as much science as you want, but you won't be able to spend it all until you upgrade.

for example, late into the tree it takes 550 science to unlock certain nodes. you cant have them until you are upgraded.

it limits the complexity of things you can research to things costing less than 100 science each.
