EVA Reports on Kerbin

Recommended Posts

I'm having the hardest time finding the EVA report areas for these exploration missions. I've already completed 2 that required flying at certain altitudes, but it seems the EVA areas are tiny and i'm just driving by/missing them.

Currently looking for C9-40 Beta and Alpha driving in my sweet airplane gokart

Any tips on these?

p.s. Do i have to get off the ladder from my plane?

Finding them is part of the game. If you want to know them beforehand, it's kind of cheaty, but you have two possibilities:

- Alt-F12 and then look for "Display Biomes".

You only get the surface EVA reports s when your feet are on the ground. You can take reports from the ladder, but they will show up as "flying above ..." on Kerbin.

I've just done one of these where there were 3 sites close to each other (alpha, beta, gamma). I landed the plane somewhere nearby that was flat enough, and taxied the rest of the way. In the mk1 cockpit in any case, I got a 'Kerbin's surface' EVA report by having the pilot stand on the roof of the cockpit.

Since nobody's mentioned it: if you set the EVA report marker as navigation target (map view, but you managed to figure out where it was so I guess you already know this part), the navball marker will start flashing when you're in range. You also get a nice yellow popup message that says "You are entering <location>" at the top of the screen (and a similar one for when you go out of range again). As for the EVA report... technically you don't have to be on the ground, but your kerbal does need to have both feet on SOMETHING (your plane counts!) and not on a ladder.

Hi everyone and welcome to "How to die within 6 seconds!" On this episode, we have Jebidiah Kerman standing on a plane going 500 MPH just to get a better view!

100th Post!

I think it's quite obvious I didn't mean you should try it while the plane is moving :P

That did make me chuckle though :D

Also... we use metric here at KSC ;)

Guys, the OP clearly stated that the EVA reports must be done at altitude.

My recommendation to you is to do them from orbit. That way you can just climb out of the ship and hang outside of it as you near the site.

And no, you don't have to have your Kerbal clinging to anything to make an EVA report. You can launch em out of the cockpit at 15,000m and 600m/s and have em go flying far away from the plane, and still be able to make the EVA report.

Hmm. It dosen't seem clear to me. However, what you say is also valid, depending on the contract.

It seems on the ground, the explore areas can be really small. So yes, it might take some really precise landing/roving/walking to hit the spot. Using the navigation options is a good idea.

There are also contracts that specify an altitude, but might say something weird like "above 19,000m." In that case, those contracts are sometimes only achievable from space.

Good luck,

-Claw

As far as I know, there are no EVA report contracts that require you to be off the ground in an atmosphere at the time - I've done quite a few of those kinds of contracts. They usually have separate parameters for "crew report in flight above/below X" and "EVA report from the surface", and since the OP said "driving" rather than "flying", we can infer his are on the ground.

Correct. The "while flying" ones require crew reports not eva reports.

Never mind. I re-read the OP again and I take back what I said.

For getting surface reports, I find the trick is to just land the plane nearby and taxi to the spot. If you keep adjusting your heading relative to the target, you won't miss the site. If you exit it before you manage to stop, then you can try turning around (very slowly if your plane is using landing gear), or since you just need an EVA report, you can exit and walk back a ways.

You know landing gear have steering locked by default right? Right click them to unlock it :) (warning: may cause undesirable behaviour at high speeds.... ;))
