Gear brakes stop working without pilot

Recommended Posts

Built a plane (with MK1 cockpit) to make some "perform visual survey" missions, some which involve making an EVA report landed.

Everything went fine, until i left the plane to make the EVA. A message appears then that SAS has being deactivated because of pilot missing, but it seems this leads to the gear brakes not working anymore too. Long story short, all i could do then was watching my plane starting to slide away pretty fast :/ Not really logical that i can't leave a plane parked with brakes on its own ;)

And a question a bit out of topic: Is there any way to make the spots for those contracts visible while flying ? Incredible hard landing at the right spot if you can only see it in map view.

From memory, you need to active the 'handbrake', as it were. I think you have to double-tap the brake key ('B' by default) to activate the handbrake before exiting the vehicle. :)

I'm sure it was activated, else i could not have landed at all ;)

Engage the wheel brakes by clicking the Brakes icon by the altimeter, this still works even with no pilot but you do need a Kerbal on board or a powered probe to control a craft at all.

That's how i activated it. But they get deactivated if the kerbal gets on EVA, and then the only thing he can do is looking at his plane as it's rolling away...

Click the map waypoints to target them.

That only displays an icon on the navball, but that doesn't tell me if i'm 100 meters away from it or 10km. Would be nice to have a way seeing the spot while flying and not only the direction it is.

Okay I'm testing it here and the brakes are staying on when the Kerbal is on EVA, seems not to matter if I use a pilot or an engineer/scientist or even both.

If you pressed B again before going on EVA the brakes will disengage though, but other than that they should stay on even with an empty craft.

Can you reproduce this?

I will try to and let you know. Could it be because my landing gears are experimental parts form a contract and not unlocked yet ?

Ok that's a bit embarrassing now but i couldn't reproduce it with the same savegame and plane design somehow. No idea why it rolled away on my first flight (only thing i could imagine is that i came on the B key while brakes where activated without recognizing it). Sorry for wasting time :/
