Haven´t played it since a very long time.

Do they still have birds on Vacuum worlds / in space?

(while overall I like the game the presence of birds in vacuum always had been my biggest point of criticism with this game)

Nope, I mean flying birds ...

and yep, during the time I played the game (till the beginning of this year maybe) the Moon Biomes where not fundamentally different from atmospheric Biomes, except that they were a little bit colder.

Except of this there was everything you could find in atmospheric Biomes as well... flying birds, animals and so on.

(similarly if you built a stairs that was so big that it extended above the atmosphere (till the space Biome with its asteroids) ... it was so cold that you were in constant danger of freezing to death .. but it still had flying birds)

no. you need life support on moon, in asteroid mini-biome and in asteroid clusters that are on there own.

Sounds like it would be time to start Starbound once again in this case.

I always found that the presence of birds and animals in Space/Vacuum Biomes took away a lot of the uniquenes these Biomes should possess.

If this has been fixed then it definitely has changed for the better :)

is that a glitch?

Nope, it seems to me like intended behavior ... the discussion about this already has going on a year ago on the official forums ... I guess if it were a glitch, it would have been fixed (by the dev) by now

I picked up Starbound about the same time I picked up KSP--ironic, since in both cases you pay for access to a game that's in development, and on both cases there's a strong sandbox aspect to the gameplay.

The similarities end there, though. It's almost like Squad and Chucklefish decided to jointly demonstrate how--and how not, respectively--to approach the same development model. Squad has maintained regular and significant developments, multi-tiered and unique gameplay, and open communications to a vested community of both players and mod builders.

Chucklefish has failed on nearly every one of these critical points, despite having a good concept, a solid foundation of a game, and grand plans for release features. I haven't touched their game in months, and I'm not the only one--several months after initial release, when it was clear what Chucklefish was doing, the game hemmoraged players so badly it was grotesque. In response, they scurried to announce all the awesome things they were working on and wanted to do--but to me it felt like too little, too late.

Maybe I'm too bitter, and maybe I should pick it back up to see what has changed. The fact remains, though, that while I haven't touched Starbound in months, I have (conversely) never been more active and vested in KSP, and I'm not looking to leave

This is why I heavily consider if I should buy any early access games ever again. Many developers are scammers who make a base for the game, throttle down update frequency until they kill the game in rake in the cash from all the 60$ alpha purchases. Space Base DF-9 and Planetary Annihilation are good examples of this. This is abused way too much on steam.
