Save editing more experience.

Recommended Posts

Not sure if this is the right forum, but as far as I can tell it's the closest thing. How do I edit a save file to give kerbals more experience? I just put two of them in orbit, but they didn't gain anything for some reason. I can't be asked to try again and want to resolve this by save editing.

They're below level 1, so orbiting Kerbin should have been enough. Yes, they were recovered.

doesn't quite work like that afaik. regardless of their level, if they have already received experience for orbiting kerbin, then they won't receive anymore for orbiting kerbin.

I'm no expert of the game, not by a long-shot. It was just something I noticed when I accidentally sent Jeb on what was effectively the same mission twice and he didn't get exp for the second run.

According to the wiki, orbiting Kerbin is 2xp, which is the requirement for level 1. The 75x75 orbit they were in should have been enough to level them up under any circumstances. Neither of them gained XP, and neither of them had been to space before.

Okay. In that case, here is the contents of my save file for jeb, who has planted a flag on the Mun:

As you can see, editing save files to add experience is a complete pain in the backside.

This doesn't need to pass an audit. I put a pod with kerbal on the pod, sent the kerbal on EVA, quicksaved. Added one line to his flight log. Loaded the game, recovered kerbal, had more XP.

}
FLIGHT_LOG
{
flight = 2
2 = ExitVessel,Kerbin
2 = Flight,Kerbin
2 = Land,Kerbin
2 = Land,Gilly <-this is my whole edit
}

NOTE: he gained the full 14 XP but only advanced to level 2. In order to get him to level 3, I had to do this twice, and only added Minmus the first time.

Edit: it's not necessary that the kerbal is on EVA and recovered individually. However, just sitting in a pod on the launchpad will not create a flight log. EVA and back will do; igniting the engines and being "in flight" for a moment probably also would do. But something has to happen or there is no flight log for you to edit.
