Scientists, Engineers, and Pilots

Hello there! The update brought scientists, engineers, and pilots . . . and new Kerbals are assigned to these randomly . . . but I was wondering, is there a way to choose what a Kerbal is through the persistent.sfs file? I have looked at it and have not found anything, but I don't want to go experimenting and mess something up unless someone already knows how to do this. Thanks in advance!

A few people have asked already, and from what I gather it's just not possible without writing a plugin, because the class choice is based on the kerbal's name, sorry

Does anybody knows how to train your Kerbals? Because it sucks for the engineers specially that the only thing they can do is to re-pack parachutes because they are still on lvl 1. Please help

You have to take them on different kinds of missions - kerbin orbit and back will generally get you to level 1, landing on the Mun, planting a flag, and then going to visit Minmus will get you to level 2. So far I don't have any level 3 kerbals yet, but I haven't been much further than Minmus in my 0.90 career game (transfer windows are ages away )
