Sun orbit...(Get the lowest orbit possible)

Recommended Posts

The year is 2150 and NASA has developed a device that takes solar energy and beams the power to Kerbin. The only problem is that you need to get the solar panels as close as possible with out dying...It would be nice if you could land on the sun...but you don't think you can. So attempt to fly up and get as close as you can.

Entries must be in a screen shot and posted down below

lowest orbit wins first place...and gets 10000 points

2nd....5000 points

3rd....2500points

extras:

attempt to land on a single planet before for 100 points...(picture needed)

Move and asteroid into that orbit and keep it there... 500 added(picture needed)

1 kerbal equals 50 points(Picture needed)

using 1 tank of fuel equals 100 points(Picture needed)

RULES:

time limit to 5 minutes

1.NO hacks...except when leaving kerbin's gravity suck as infinite fuel wen leaving kerbin but as soon as you get out of it and into the suns sphere of influence then it is time to start the clock

2.Attempt with no mods...except for a two...posted later

3.must have at least one solar panel attached and some form of communication

4.mods allowing you to beam the energy to kerbin is allowed and encouraged, and a mod to cool the ship when you get close to the sun

5.Have fun...and remember were all counting on you

I saw as SRV Ron pointed out you can only get so close until you explode, delta v I guess

You realize that the delta V needed to reach Kerbal's sun is huge, to orbit even bigger.

Until the physics are upgraded, here is how low you can get before your ship explodes from overheating.

The probe, an interplanetary universal lander from an early version.

Have you successfully made the trip yourself? How expensive was the probe sent there? Sandbox or Career?

Welcome to the Forum, interesting first post, but needs a bit of work to be a 'proper' challenge... as SRV Ron has pointed out, this is an extreme challenge that requires lots of fuel, and you can only go so low before any ship is destroyed...

Read this: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/24898-Challenge-Submission-Guide

and some other challenges to get an idea of how scoring should be done! :)

(And none of this is meant nastily or anything, these are just pointers nearly everyone gets )

Here is an idea how to conduct such a mission with no infinite fuel cheat.

1. Go for an Eve intercept where a retrograde slingshot gets you into a Moho intercept. Carefully aero brake to cut speed further but be careful that you don't get captured into an orbit or crash on Eve.

2. Use a Moho retrograde slingshot to further degrade your solar orbit.

3. Use any additional slingshots to get close to the desired parigee.

4. Burn to circularize.

The probe example I used went there directly. With the intercepts, you can save a ton of Delta V in achieving the mission goal without the fuel cheat. A LV-N and Ion engines would be desirable in avoiding having to make a ridiculously huge launcher.

Expect the mission to take several years of Kerbal time to complete.

yep. I've done Kerbolar missions (see my sig for the Starflight One Tube Rescue, for instance, which had a 30 day death clock on a terminal sundive), they do take planning and LOTS of fuel and/or ridiculously efficient engines (I used the Super Atomic and the Poseidon's Revenge by Luvodicus. My favourite engines and I still use them in 0.90).
