Backup tools for ship designs!

Recommended Posts

I think the game needs a way to backup ship designs(autobackup preferable or the default setup with options to change) to be pulled up(game mode permitting) from previous games. I would hate to do that work and loose the ship. They can be kept in a neutral location and then loaded into that game type. That neutral location should also be easily backuped itself out of the game.

Or does this exist and I missed it somehow?

This doesn't currently exist in game, but there's nothing to stop you from just grabbing the files from your save folder (KSP/saves/<savename>/Ships/(VAB or SPH)/) and storing them somewhere safe. It would be nice to have something like that in the game, but it's not really necessary.

After 600 hours of game I've almost never reused rockets from the same game (ssto and plains isn't my cup of tea). I've thinker several times about reusing crafts from previous versions, but always ended up building a new one, because from version to version my opinion about design changes, as well as stock parts with their characteristics and list of used mods.

I'm not saying that it's a bad idea, but that this idea looks better while the one hasn't played some time when a brand new shiny rocket can be build quite fast.

Usually my crafts are built to fulfill some goal, but goals are changing with each update.

Maybe because of this, the ability to copy craft files is good enough (post above my).

It's worth mentioning that stock parts at some point will stop changing significantly, so this would probably be more useful around release. With 0.25 I had a spaceplane design that worked really well so I backed it up for 0.90, but with the new editor I think I can probably rebuild it better anyway (can't yet :( - need R&D/SPH tier 3 ;.;), so I see your point.

It could be RPed as a bluepring/design computer thing. It could be used to pull between games also. And then used for multiplayer sharing. so it coud be very useful. As is there is no good way to share that I know of. The convenience of P2P or other servers and ship design transfers built into the game could do alot for the community. It would be much easier than making youtube videos or making accounts for a file transfer service. When you have it on your computer those are already technically a wasteful service unless treated as a backup. So why not straight to the sources.

As were said in the first comment to your post:

All crafts you've built and saved in your game are saved into (KSP/saves/<savename>/Ships/(VAB or SPH)/) folders and they named exactly how you named them in the game "rocket_or_plain_name.craft".

From this folder you can copy and move them wherever you want, it's your blueprints. Such possibility absent in the game GUI (graphical user interface) but allowed by the game through game folder and absolutely valid / legal.
