Takeoff from the other end of the runway.

Recommended Posts

This one should be nice and popular. Yes, I can taxi to the other end, turn around and take off. However, being able to choose to take off going the other direction would be a wonderful option. If not, meet those of us desiring the other end halfway and have us taxi the plane from the spaceplane hangar.

This is a bit off topic, but it shows how silly the layout of the KSC is. Normally the hangar would have the flight line in front of it, and taxiways leading alongside the runway to either end at minimum. According to the current layout, the planes are either towed into position or the planes are literally taxiing to the end and then performing a 360 in that tiny little space. I agree, there are MANY designs that wouldn't survive that and most of them aren't even that impressive!

We also need to be able to take off from the old KSC, the roof of the VAB, and the runway on the island

Old KSC: nope. That should just be removed altogether :P. Or at least spruce the place up a bit.

VAB roof: helicopters/VTOLs? Eh, sure why not; people make those already.

island runway: why? it's pretty much right next to KSC, which has a better runway.

It's perfectly fine and normal operating procedures for smaller airports to have aircraft use the runway(s) as a taxiway, and even something as huge as the Boeing 747 can perform a 180 at the end of the runway. Granted, KSC is not a "small airport" given what its facilities are for, but yeah.

The 747 has 70 degree 'max' turning radius on the main mount and requires 228 feet of pavement to perform a 180. By that denomination the KSC has a very thin runway for it's length, and is not nearly wide enough for that maneuver. The 747 makes a decent arguing point simply because it's so large. The 737 has a 60 'safe' turning radius, the shortest space it can perform a full 180 in requires 120 feet of pavement. I think it's safe to say you'd be cutting it. Based on the physics of wheels in KSP I think it's safer to say any attempt to do a turn on the runway at the KSC will result in tears and spamming of the revert button. :P Hence, taxiways. The KSC isn't specifically busy enough to demand them, it's certainly available for taxiing.

Regardless, my original suggestion is the same: please let us choose which end of the runway to take off from. I know runway 27 would get a lot more use than 09 from me.
