Can't save Kerbal in orbit: EVA Propellant not working?

I had a bit of difficulty trying to find out how to control a Kerbal in orbit.

I did look up and found you could change Kerbals with [ and ]. After bringing my ship a little closer, I took control of the Kerbal but I couldn't move him at all with the propellants. Is there a special key to activate or control it or a specific condition that has to be met with for it to work? So far that's my only problem~ Thank you.

I just recently got this game and I'm having a blast with it, though there are still gameplay mechanics that aren't fully in the tutorial or in any help page in-game that I still have to look online for them.

You have to press R to turn on the EVA pack if that's what you mean. Use the wasd keys and shift and control to fly around. Remember that the pack has limited fuel.

Yes, after you press 'r' to activate the RCS, use wsad to control forward/backward/left/right and left-shift/left-ctrl for up/down

I did the same thing when I first started playing, only that I instead assumed that jet packs needed to be unlocked in the tech tree. So I would only EVA hanging onto a ladder after I lost Jeb to deep space since he didn't know he even had a jet pack.

can imagine how this played out

jeb: "I'm on the ladder ksc, over"

capcom: "be careful Jeb we don't want you falling off"

jeb: "ksc we have a problem I've slipped and now floating away from the capsule. I cant reach it. I'm drifting away. help. ksc"

capcom: "noooooooooooooo!!"

cut 2 weeks later at jebs funeral

capcom: "such a shame about poor jeb"

flight controller: "yeah certainly is"

....

flight controller: "hey didn't he have an eva jetpack on...?"

capcom: *facepalm* "frak"

It wasn't the first kerbal I lost on EVA, but it was the first time I couldn't "revert flight" to fix my error. I lost him on an escape trajectory and I think he floated around the sun for a couple years until I unlocked the claw which I used to grab him and and bring him back to safety... I even positioned a retractable ladder that he could reach from the grasp of the claw. He didn't seem the same old Jeb after that ordeal.
